EXCLUSIVE: Some Jersey City Muslims did celebrate 9/11, cop and residents say

Media outlets, after scouring archived news stories and video footage, could not find verified accounts of Jersey City Muslims rejoicing.

But in a new examination by NJ Advance Media, a police officer who worked on 9/11 and residents on the outskirts of Journal Square say they witnessed small pockets of people celebrating before the groups dispersed or were broken up by authorities.

The NJ Advance Media inquiry, encompassing more than two dozen interviews conducted since Nov. 25, found Trump's broad assertion that thousands of people cheered to be baseless. At the same time, the inquiry provides the first credible indication of at least two modest celebrations, as described by on-the-record sources who say they witnessed the behavior.

"When I saw they were happy, I was pissed," said Ron Knight, 56, a Tonnele Avenue resident who said he heard cries of "Allahu Akbar" as he shouldered his way through a crowd of 15 to 20 people on John F. Kennedy Boulevard that morning.

Collectively, the gatherings amounted to dozens of people at the two locations, the witnesses said. Callers also flooded the 911 system with accounts of jubilant Muslims on a rooftop at a third location, three police officers said, but a reporter was unable to find witnesses there 14 years later.

Among the news organization's findings:

• A retired police captain, Peter Gallagher, said he cleared a rooftop celebration of 20 to 30 people at 6 Tonnele Ave., a four-story apartment building with an unobstructed view of Lower Manhattan, in the hours after the second tower fell.

"Some men were dancing, some held kids on their shoulders," said Gallagher, then a sergeant. "The women were shouting in Arabic and keening in the high-pitched wail of Arabic fashion. They were told to go back to their apartments since a crowd of non-Muslims was gathering on the sidewalk below and we feared for their safety."

FBI agents took several residents of the building into custody days later, according to neighbors and an account in The Star-Ledger. It is unclear why they were detained.

• Knight was one of two Tonnele Avenue residents who said they witnessed a crowd celebrating on John F. Kennedy Boulevard not far from Masjid Al-Salam, the mosque where Omar Abdel-Rahman, known as the "blind sheikh," preached before the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Carlos Ferran, 60, who lives in the same building as Knight, said he was on his way to a liquor store to buy beer when he came across the gathering on the sidewalk.

"Some of them had their hands in the air," Ferran said. "They were happy."

• Numerous people called police to report an exultant crowd on the roof of 2801 John F. Kennedy Blvd., a distinctive, five-story apartment building at the intersection of Sip Avenue, said retired officer Arthur Teeter, who worked in the radio room at police headquarters on Sept. 11.

The Donald's claim wasn't that one or a few people celebrated in NJ, it was that THOUSANDS of people were celebrating in NJ. 5 people here or 10 people there doesn't substantiate a claim of THOUSANDS .

Trump was undoubtedly wrong. Again.

Just one on that day would have been thousands.

one or a few people celebrated in NJ,

Nor does the cited article tally to one or a few people. Several groups and crowds were reported, including one group of 20-30 people. Believe it or not, surveys do not poll every citizen in the USA to reach conclusions.

Watch more videos about the rise of Fundamentalists in the US in the 90s, and you'll have little doubt that there were thousands in the NYC Metro Area alone celebrating. I imagine that 90% of them would have been smart enough to celebrate inside their homes & the mosque.

The numbers of Islamic Fundamentalists and Sympathizers in the USA is probably a hundred thousand and possibly a lot more.

Mainstream major party candidates all suck, which has been described as one reason outsiders are dong so well, i.e., Trump and Bernie.

Lets assume for the sake of argument that one million NJ Muslims were indeed celebrating in small pockets of 10-20-50 people each. If so, we can all agree that this is a major issue to face, so lets put that into the "asked and answered" column for the time being.

The narrow issue at play in this post Mr. Trump's claim: that there were THOUSANDS of people were celebrating in New Jersey. When asked later about it, Trump asserted it was true because that is what he saw on Television.

So again, yes, there were isolated groups of Muslims cheering in NJ (which is a problem), but even as Blurtman's article noted:

"The NJ Advance Media inquiry, encompassing more than two dozen interviews conducted since Nov. 25, found Trump's broad assertion that thousands of people cheered to be baseless."

Again, if there was footage of "Thousands of Muslims" celebrating in NJ (not in mosques, or rooftops or other small groups) why cant anyone find any evidence of this TV footage he is referring to?

So it is not that you doubt Muslims in NJ were celebrating, which people like unfunny Colbert still contend is not the case, but that there is no footage of thousands celebrating. You acknowledge that there is proof that groups of as many as 20-30 were celebrating. As the provided link describes a small sampling than may tally in the 100's, and that in the entire population might not rule out that thousands were celebrating , and in fact is stronger evidence that that may be the case than anything you have or other deniers have presented to the contrary, you remain focused on the footage. OK.....

This is like the ultraspecific claim about "no refugee committing an act of terrorism on US Soil since 9/11".
http://patrick.net/Vetting+Refugees%2C+Refugee+Terrorist+Greatest+Hits

Apparently if your fingerprints are on IEDs and you're listed in a Pentagon Database of Iraqi Bombers, that "awesome vetting process" still lets you get and receive refugee status. And of course, it's totally crazy to think that somebody who, not only according to physical fingerprint evidence but actual bragging about it, bombs US Soldiers in Iraq, wouldn't dream of doing something in the USA.

Or the greatest refugee/triple Fundamentalist agent of all time, ex-Egyptian Officer, twice traitor to the CIA, then US Army, then FBI, Ali Mohammed.

Some people just like to split hairs to make a useless point...

Isnt a large part of Trump's appeal someone who tells it like it is? As such, it really bothers me that he (or his surrogates) continue to insist he was "right all along" as if this footage somehow exists and for whatever reason, people are hiding it. Imagine how much stronger his position would be had he simply admitted he misspoke, but that its immaterial to the real issue of whatever he wants to say about "Muslims in America who..."

Fact of the matter is, there are a lot of middle of the road voters who have already made their minds up that they wont vote for Hillary no matter what. However if its a matter of voting for trump or staying home, stuff like this hurts his credibility and image as a straight shooter or someone who will come clean in the light of clear and convincing evidence.

11   CDon   2015 Dec 22, 1:46pm

In many ways, it reminds me of the Clinton apologists who said he was just "lying about sex" while refusing to address the issue that he was lying under oath, and then continued to lie about it over and over again. Politics 101 - When you are caught red handed - admit then re-direct, but never never double down and then have the issue hound you for years.

people are hiding it. Imagine how much stronger his position would be had he simply admitted he misspoke,

"There were people that were cheering on the other side of New Jersey where you have large Arab populations," Trump said. "They were cheering as the World Trade Center came down. I know it might be not politically correct for you to talk about it, but there were people cheering as that building came down."

FACT CHECK: True.

"Police say it didn't happen," Stephanopoulos pressed, to which Trump said he saw it himself on television.

FACT CHECK: False. The NJ Advance Media story shows what a doofus Stephanopoulus is. What kind of newsman does zero research and makes ridiculous claims?

Trump claimed: "It was well covered at the time."

FACT CHECK: True. It was covered in the media and on the internet at the time. Same with the "Dancing Israelis" which people now deny ever happened.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/23/politics/donald-trump-new-jersey-cheering-september-11/

"Hey, I watched when the World Trade Center came tumbling down."

FACT CHECK: I haven't seen any proof that he did or did not see the towers come down, but it was televised.

"And I watched in Jersey City, New Jersey, where thousands and thousands of people were cheering as that building was coming down. Thousands of people were cheering."

FACT CHECK: Since hair splitting seems to be the norm amongst deniers, nowhere in the quote did Trump say he saw on TV thousands of Muslims cheering. In the NJ Advance Media story, by no means a thorough survey of all Jersey City residents or witnesses, groups of as many as 20-30 Musiims were reported to be cheering. This data provides much more evidence that Trump's claim of thousands cheering could be correct. Deniers have absolutely no proof to the contrary, and the available data makes their argument look quite weak.

http://www.snopes.com/2015/11/22/donald-trump-cheering-911/

But more to the point, Trump cites numerous acts of terror committed by Muslims in the USA, including the recent San Bernadino shooters, and he references the cheering Muslims (which did happen) to suggest that the USA take a step back and consider what they are doing. That seems prudent to many.

13   Blurtman   2015 Dec 22, 4:15pm

People in the USA are totally hung up about sex. In other societies, having a mistress is no big deal. Yes, the guy lied, but he should never have been cornered to begin with. Look at all of the outlandish claims and wasted millions on ridiculous investigations regarding the Clintons. A bigger travesty than Bill walking the dog was the way folks tried to turn it into political advantage. A terrible and painful sideshow for all Americans. That was truly disgusting.

Here is CBS News TV reporting Muslims cheering:

Could Trump have seen this? Of course you somehow know he did not. Radio and newspaper reports at the time also said the same.

NY Post, 9/14/01:
Here in New York, it was easy to get angry listening to Egyptians, Palestinians and the Arabs of nearby Paterson, N.J., celebrate as they received word of the murderous attacks in New York and Washington. But Mayor Giuliani (who has been tireless and magnificent in this crisis) rightly warned New Yorkers that it would be wrong to take their anger out on the city's Arab and Muslim residents. Attacks on Arab-Americans in Paterson or elsewhere are utterly indefensible.

Numerous reports of Muslims cheering from credible sources:

Considering the indisputable reports of Muslims cheering, and the NJ Advance Media story, maybe you can get more traction questioning Stephanopoulos, who it can be proved is absolutely wrong. If you are anything but a troll, and since you seem to have a computer, should't you research your facts before you spout such drivel? Lazy and ignorant, a deadly combination.

And these reports of Muslims celebrating in the USA were interspersed with footage from around the World.

Too bad the damn PA was on the ball for once and illegally held journalists and confiscated all their footage, so that only the one with the ululating woman, the two drivers, and the rest of the 10-20 second footage came out. Even that footage was subjected to Gary-esque dismissal, but it's been verified as being filmed the day of 9/11.

21   Blurtman   2015 Dec 23, 8:55am

One might have expected the major networks to have set up cameras in NJ and NY Muslim neighborhoods in advance of the attacks on the twin towers to film the cheering.

Did you carry your Instamatic camera with you in public where ever you went in 2001?

Actually I used to have a disposable somewhere in the car pretty much all the time before camera phones. All parents did.

Do you know what the word residents means? These people are claiming it was outside their homes. None of them had a camera in the house?

Retired Police Captain of Paterson, NJ confirms he went to a building (not far from a Jihadi Mosque, Masjid Al-Salaam, where the Blind Sheik Omar Mohammed preached) where 20-30 gathered to celebrate, based on 9/11 calls from residents/workers.

There were at least two separate incidents of Arabs celebrating the WTC Attacks.

Not to mention abundant calls-in to TV and Radio like Howard Stern, where Firefighters, PSEG Workers, Verizon Employees, and Residents of all stripes from White to Hispanic to Black, expressed outrage at seeing dancing Muslims in the streets as well as on rooftops. Crooks Avenue specifically mentioned by multiple reporters (Check it out on Google Maps, chock full of Arab Businesses, and many are Lebanese).

* A retired police captain, Peter Gallagher, said he cleared a rooftop celebration of 20 to 30 people at 6 Tonnele Ave., a four-story apartment building with an unobstructed view of Lower Manhattan, in the hours after the second tower fell.

Too bad Smart Phones weren't around back then.

What we need is a release of 911 calls and reports sent to the FBI by Jersey PDs on 9/11. Neither have ever been released, if they still exist. Trump could order the FBI to release reports of the FBI's findings, which would at least confirm citizen reports of dancing Muslims.

Keep in mind every news crew in the NYC Metro Area was either descending on Manhattan, or interviewing families of WTC workers. They weren't driving around downtown Patterson or Jersey City.
