The takeover of a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon appears to be more than just a protest of the impending imprisonment of two ranchers who set fires that spread into public lands. The armed demonstrators are led by Ammon Bundy, whose father, Cliven, has refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of the federal Bureau of Land Management to own some public lands or to regulate their use for grazing. But the government is giving the Bundy family a pretty good deal on the grazing rights it refuses to pay for.

In 1993, the bureau declined to renew Cliven Bundy’s grazing permits in parts of Nevada that were reserved for a threatened desert tortoise. But Bundy continued grazing his cattle there anyway and refused to pay any fines or fees. He claimed that the land really belonged to him, so why should he have to pay over $1 million in fines?

Now his son has furthered the fight by seizing the Oregon refuge. In a news conference Sunday, Ammon Bundy explained that he was there in protest of the “unconstitutional transactions of land rights and water rights.”

Those transactions, though, can be a pretty good deal, regardless of their constitutionality. According to a 2015 report by the Center for Biological Diversity, the Bureau of Land Management’s fees for grazing cattle on public land are much lower than the fees charged by private landowners, and they’ve only become cheaper in recent years.

Frankly, the BLM should require little to no taxpayer funding as it should be able to recoup costs by leasing land. Unfortunately, due to our undemocratic system where a state with around half a million people has the same number of Senators as one with tens of millions like Florida, California, or NY, land leases are rigged as a giveaway to wealthy ranchers.

1   HEY YOU   2016 Jan 5, 9:30am

Almost posted a related article.

How many of the slime protesters have Federal loans or receive some form of their Big Govt. assistance?
All govt. loans to these SOCIALIST should be called in immediately.
Did they drive on roads that had any Federal Funding to get to the refuge?
How many are dirtbag Rep/Con/Tea voters enjoying benefits of self reliant Americans' tax dollar.

These dumbasses makes the rest of the ranchers look bad.

I guarantee you that they pay almost no income tax or FICA. They get federal draught relief which can be a lot.

Well GEE! Hey You, why don't you petty ass bastards step and set your sights a little higher for your pet Hoodlums you bastards keep around for voting fodder.
Why in the fuck don't you encourage them to take over federal land where some administrative maniac placed a land grab and is misusing the land?
Why MUST you keep them pigeonholed in the quaint little Ghettos you fuckers were so gracious to carve out for them.

THEN THAT WAY!!! You can be comparing apples to apples you petty fuck!

Go ON! Go ahead and ask them. Would they rather have your paltry welfare checks or would they rather take over a plot of land illegally seized from a rancher some where?

What administrative maniac? It's always been BLM land.

BTW, the same people who bitch about Negroes are often the same ASSHOLES! who brought them here by the millions back in the day. Let them pay for it.

The big mistake was not dividing up the plantation owner's property amongst their former slaves as compensation for unpaid labor.

It's the second amendment right to armed seizure of so called government properties.

Why do they hate initiative?

6   lostand confused   2016 Jan 5, 10:29am

Maybe I should just seize the Treasury building ?

As long as you're white and delightsome (2 Nephi 30:6, 2 Nephi 5:21, 3 Nephi 2:15) and wear a cowboy hat, you should be okay. Obama the Unready will treat you with kid gloves then.

8   Ceffer   2016 Jan 5, 10:56am

Why don't they just send in the Mormons to massacre them and seize their wives?

9   Blurtman   2016 Jan 5, 11:26am

The militiamen need to go transgender. Untouchable then.

I'm not bitching about the Negroes, just Whigroes.
My rant was in response to the stuipd notion that Libtards bring up time and time about about people and a certain voting class of people standing up for them selves and their rights.
Then the Libs like to put it out there, that they are in somehow engaging in Welfare. It's that same anoyance that Trump is shinning like a fresh beacon of light. These guys arguments never make any sense.
It's just petty pesky annoyance.

Basically I could respect BLM if they were actually fighting for a better plot of land than the quaint ghettos in every city in America MLK that the Honkey Liberals all patted them selves on the back at the ribbon cutting ceramony. And have never onced looked back at the dead bodies pilling up for their lack of give a crapness. While they set their eyes on legal guns and their lawful owners. If those guys want to impress me, then go take over a national park and start laying out the livingroom over the nesting place of the last Rogernonameicus ground snail in the world. That caused that plot of land to be siezed in the first place.

This fiasco might end up being great for the price of beef. Turns out being a rancher is a great deal. C'mon Millenials, get to it ! Become ranchers !

http://bigthink.com/strange-maps/291-federal-lands-in-the-us

I don't know about the price of beef, but this is going to have to increase the number of ranchers out there. Although, water and irrigation probably don't come cheap. There must be some reason why Hammond didn't just sell his ranch to the BLM, long ago, and move to another location. One would think that the BLM could have helped him figure out where to move to for an equally good ranch if they were paying a decent price for the land, to add to the refuge.

Maybe the price the BLM pays for land it buys from ranchers is also discounted 93% ?

I'm not sure if I follow you but if you mean PC buffoons, the real solution to black inequity - and all poor people - is industrial production.

By getting rid of all these unfair multilateral trade agreements, and demanding better terms for ourselves, we can get there.

We own the most profitable, popular shopping mall in the world, but we don't charge the appropriate amount of rent for those looking to move in and set up shop from abroad.

13   Tenpoundbass   2016 Jan 5, 12:13pm

I can give two shits about who paid what and who pocketed what. There's no such thing in inequality in a healthy America. And any notion that says there is, is really just trying to create an inequality that disengages rightful hard working recipients, and replacing their spot at the table with some political expedient puppet.

If there's an inequality problem in America, then it has been imposed by the last 10 to 15 years of shoddy self serving Governance, which that is just the Pill that Trump was prescribed for.

Clinton is proof, that all it takes is just one President, even if by happenstance and not because of any concerted effort at all from that President. Can undo a whole a legacy of a two previous disastrous presidencies. And still leave office with a surplus. Clinton by JUST NOT being Reagan, Bush or Carter. Really did more for this country. Than what he actually set out to do.

Both the blm and forest service lose tons of money as a giveaway to ranchers, loggers, and extraction industries mostly creating roads and infrastructure. Yet another example of red state welfare. http://www.perc.org/articles/price-we-pay

Rancher's demand: Federal lands should be converted to "local control"

Translation of the rancher's demand: The federal government should transfer ownership of land to private ranchers. This will be at the expense of every other US citizen, because WE, the people, all own that land TOGETHER.

Background: Ranchers are getting all kinds of almost-free grazing privileges on federal lands. But ranchers are also very greedy and think that they should be GIVEN the land as their own private property. Rancher's are using the "local control" propaganda phrase to hide the fact that what they really want is to take ownership of the land themselves. The whole thing is a pure land-grab attempt, at the expense of all the rest if us.

Is stealing land from the public a conservative value? You can bet it is.

So you're saying you want Clinton back in the white house.

Thank goodness you're finally getting over your delusions about Trump.
