Currently reading The Island At The Center of the World, about the Dutch experience colonizing what became "New York" after the British stole it from them.

This was interesting as a side-story:

200 years on, the descendants of the original Patroon still owned much of the land, renting it out.

Until the renters got tired of it of servitude to the parasitical wealthy, banded together, and won their freedom.

Feudalism is the desired end-goal of landowners, and they are the first to turn traitor since their wealth is in land and they must cooperate with the invader to cut their loses, plus they offer local control to the new occupier.

On the other hand, when the central government's army isn't around, they're the first to disobey, demand autonomy, or go full retard.
