I'm a professor at a midsize state school. I have been teaching college classes for nine years now. I have won (minor) teaching awards, studied pedagogy extensively, and almost always score highly on my student evaluations. I am not a world-class teacher by any means, but I am conscientious; I attempt to put teaching ahead of research, and I take a healthy emotional stake in the well-being and growth of my students. Things have changed since I started teaching. The vibe is different. I wish there were a less blunt way to put this, but my students sometimes scare me...

yeah they don't understand what it's like to have the government seize your property, then wage an internal war, then put you in a prison camp, then force you into a risky exodus into another country.

spoiled fucking rotten + dumb as a brick.

Maybe he should stop teaching that course in Immense Hirsute Lesbian studies.

Judge Judy hit the nail on the head several years ago when she told a young black girl, after mocking her attempts to explain why she went back to her boyfriend after he published nude photos of her and denied her suit: "You're dumb as dirt and got what you deserved!". She doesn't mince words!

Most Professi don't give a rat's ass. The clod, spoiled brats came in stupid and ignorant, they leave just as stupid and ignorant with a piece of paper saying they spent the money and put in the time.

What's the biggie?

"Students, you ignorant sluts!"

Anyone notice after 9 years of teaching this guy isn't tenure or tenure track? That says a lot.

I tried in edit mode. It won't let me enter a tag-I guess because someone already put a tag in there. it jsut says add a tag-but no place to add.

bob, it is easy to do some research. Adjuncts now make up 70% or more of the college professor/lecturer population. They get paid by course and teach in multiple colleges. IT is all part of the new flexi workforce. Some adjuncts receive 2-3k a course. Some live in poverty. Nobody wants to give tenure to a Professor and pay him full benefits-when you can deal with adjuncts.

A good case could be made as to why does America deserve educated young people in the first place when so many boondoggles of diversity, multi-culti, -studies, Marxist professors, deconstruction are placed in the path to education? When I was in college we had normal professors and normal courses and if you didn't pass the tests you failed the course.

excellent article! this is actually how it is:

I once saw an adjunct not get his contract renewed after students complained that he exposed them to "offensive" texts written by Edward Said and Mark Twain. His response, that the texts were meant to be a little upsetting, only fueled the students' ire and sealed his fate. That was enough to get me to comb through my syllabi and cut out anything I could see upsetting a coddled undergrad, texts ranging from Upton Sinclair to Maureen Tkacik — and I wasn't the only one who made adjustments, either.

THe best part of the article:

Update: After a discussion with a woman whose tweet was quoted in the story, the editors of this piece agreed that some of the conclusions drawn in the article misrepresented her tweet and the article was revised. The woman requested anonymity because she said she was receiving death threats as a result of the story, so her name has been removed. Unfortunately, threats are a horrible reality for many women online and a topic we intend to report on further.

Moby Dick is offensive literature. There's the D word, it's big and it's white.
