Anybody in a solid red or blue state has the luxury of a protest vote, and can safely choose third party. Everyone else has two meaningful choices. Anything else is a non vote.

Let's go with the self-fulfilling prophecy: if we all vote for 2 candidates, then the other 2 are protest votes, which shall therefore be avoided.
