I think that the alt-right is new enough that there is no agreed definition of the alt-right. It's both sexy and despised depending on your political orientation. There is some poorly defined association between Trump and the alt-right, and because Trump won the election, lots of people are going to try to define the alt-right to be what they want it to be.
Time will tell who wins and gets to define it. Trump and Bannon will have the most influence to the degree that they want it.
