I am trying out the desktop (Chrome) version of Signal from https://whispersystems.org/

It's a messaging app which claims to enhance your privacy. Why then does the desktop version refuse to function without the ability to listen in on what you are doing on your desktop machine at all times?

I suppose it's not that bad because I can turn off the microphone on my laptop for everything, but it would be more comforting and more convenient if Signal did not require access to the microphone in order to text.

I'm going to guess that you have no apps installed on your phone?

As few as possible.

I use my smartphone for damn few things precisely because of all the malware and spyware out there. I just don't trust any app that requires any permissions.
