Should I end "ignores" on patrick.net?

The new button which allows users to mark comments as ad hominem seems to be working reasonably well.

So do we still need the ignore option?

Well, it does give readers the ability to ignore posters for whatever reason. Maybe you can have a Thunderdome contest between the person who wants to put someone on ignore, and the person to be ignored. The winner is granted his wish. To the death!

Of course I should end it, or of course we still need it?

3   justme   2017 Feb 24, 1:00pm

We still need it. I'm often not in the mood to wade through pages of drivel. It not just ad hominem that is the problem, it is the severe lack of any redeeming value among some posters.

4   curious2   2017 Feb 24, 1:03pm

I think making Ignore temporary was a good solution. Sometimes people want a break from each other, for whatever reason. If it isn't permanent, then it's harmless, and might do some good.

5   RWSGFY   2017 Feb 24, 1:22pm

You can do away with ignore option for everyone except Gary-fucking-Andersen. That shit is seriously insufferable.

6   lostand confused   2017 Feb 24, 1:37pm

I have never used the ignore function. But if someone wants to ignore me-good for them! I think the one month thing is good, as it takes a lot energy for some people to put 80 people on ignore every month!

7   indigenous   2017 Feb 24, 2:03pm

Probably not, Bellingham Bill or Dan might cry if you do.

8   Tenpoundbass   2017 Feb 24, 4:34pm

Does the site get more traffic when factions clash on this site, or when there's harmony and balance of the two not seeing each other's post?

9   Patrick   2017 Feb 24, 4:42pm

Dunno. Ignore has been available for a long time now, so I don't really have much to compare to.

10   FortWayne   2017 Feb 24, 4:47pm

Please keep it.

I didn't want to, but had to ignore Rin, only way I could remove pornographic content images that he posted for thread titles.

If we could just ignore threads that would be easier.

11   FuckTheMainstreamMedia   2017 Feb 24, 4:58pm

Verbal diarrhea from the permanent drunks is pretty annoying. So keep the ignore.

Anything that makes porn permanently viewable is just fine by me. Except gay porn.

That was a problem, but now you can mark threads as "nsfw" and they will not show images on the home page or other lists of threads.

14   Strategist   2017 Feb 24, 5:48pm

For the record......I have never ignored anyone, nor have i ever given a "dislike"
I think most people who put someone on ignore sneak in through a different browser to view their comments.
I say end "ignores"

Yeah thanks, because some us access this site at work to while away endless meetings and that is not appropriate!!!

I don't see it, I'm using iPhone, it's not on home page, only inside threads after you tap into them.

It's just another link in the line of links at the head of each post. Not really a button.

Yeah, actually I had some problems like that myself.

Thanks @Rin for helping me come up with something to prevent such images from appearing when they should not.

that's ad hominem you got away with.

If this is the calibre of comment you are going to offer why keep coming back? To invest your time punishing those who differ with you, right?

I'm sorry Jazz, that was my most sincere sarcasm.

I'm just trying to learn you heathens from the good book, "Human Action"

Get rid of ignore temporarily and see if ad hominus does the job.

Some controversy makes the site interesting. It's the constant 4 letter words and nothing else that irritates.

26   Bellingham Bill   2017 Feb 24, 7:13pm

This site would be rather bothersome without the ignores.

The people I keep on ignore really have nothing intelligent to say, ever.

27   Y   2017 Feb 24, 7:14pm

Don't be hard on Rin. The images are a subconscience cry for help. I've pointed him in the right direction here

So do we still need the ignore option?

Only if you have a ban button. I don't want any verbal diarrhea from trolls polluting my threads and disrupting genuine and productive discussions. Just because a troll doesn't make something that qualifies as an ad hominem attack doesn't mean that he's not disrupting a thread by spreading lies and misinformation simply to prevent an intelligent discussion of a political issue. Trolls disrupt free speech even without ad hominem attacks.

Change made.

Why do you follow someone you have on ignore in a different browser, take someone you have on ignore OFF ignore so you can hit the "Ad-hom" button on their comment, then go back and hide behind ignore again?

What's the point of that action?

1. It clearly upsets you which is why you are compelled to complain about it.
2. The "ignore" function is really a ban function and should not prevent reporting ad hominem attacks.
3. Reporting an ad hominem attack should not prevent a user from banning a troll from his threads.

Perhaps you should whine less. It sounds like what a special snowflake does. Instead deal with the reality that if you act like a troll, you won't be allowed in conversations with adults. Change your ways and you get a voice. Continue acting like an ass and you don't get a voice. And if this upsets you, then tough. You are bringing it on yourself. And that is the kindest advice I can give you. I'm sure it will be ignored.

Should I end "ignores" on patrick.net?

No. You'll lose more people than you will gain. THere might be more and more of those russian trolls on the site, just being obnoxious. WE need to be able to ignore them.

I'm only half kidding. Social media and the internet in general is still young (it's still good). So we might see bigger armies of trolls employed to confuse the idiots. Somethimes it's easier to not even see their BS than to intentionally not read it. With some, such as TPB, he might even be a hired troll, but at least he's occasionally funny. With most, I could take them or leave them.

It's tough these days becasue the intelligent conservatives for the most part don't like Trump either. So the pro Trump arguments are coming from people too stupid to understand what's going on.

Here's an interesting essay by George Bush's ex-speech writer, David Frum.
