It’s important not to indulge in an easy cynicism, to say that politicians have always lied and always will. What we’re getting from Mr. Trump is simply on a different plane from anything we’ve seen before.

For one thing, politicians used to limit their outright lies to matters not easily checked — hidden affairs, under the table deals, and so on. But now we have the man who ran the Miss Universe competition in Moscow three years ago, and who declared just last year that “I know Russia well,” then last month said, “I haven’t called Russia in 10 years.”

On matters of policy, politicians used to limit their misrepresentations of facts and impacts to relatively hard-to-verify assertions. When George W. Bush insisted that his tax cuts mainly went to the middle class, this wasn’t true, but it took some number-crunching to show that. Mr. Trump, however, makes claims like his assertion that the murder rate — which ticked up in 2015 but is still barely half what it was in 1990 — is at a 45-year high. Furthermore, he just keeps repeating such claims after they’ve been debunked.

And the question is, who’s going to stop him?

The moral vacuity of Republicans in Congress, and the unlikelihood that they’ll act as any check on the president, becomes clearer with each passing day. Even the real possibility that we’re facing subversion by agents of a foreign power, and that top officials are part of the story, doesn’t seem to faze them as long as they can get tax cuts for the rich and benefit cuts for the poor.

Its a legit criticism as a sloppy talking point, but its not a lie. He also corrected this point his last speech. "Murder rate increased most in..."marcus says

And the question is, who’s going to stop him?

you wont "stop" him by misquoting and hysteria. Honest, factual reporting would help...unfortunately we dont have that.

A sloppy talking point? Saying the murder rate is at a 45 year high when it's almost at a 45 year low isn't a lie? So what is a lie in your world? Want to buy some slightly damp land in florida? I'll make you a great deal on it.

He's clarified this talking point multiple times. Anyone pointing at this stat as a lie is willfully misinterpreting Trump's meaning. Pure spin

All politicians have sloppy talking points. The only thing different here is the fake news hysteria.

Want to show some evidence that he clarified this talking point multiple times? He repeated this totally false claim for months on the campaign trail. He repeated it again at the roundtable meeting of sheriffs on Feb 7th. I'm wilfully misinterpreting trump's meaning because he repeated time after time that the murder rate is the highest in 47 years which is totally false? Did you really say that? Seriously? Reporting flat out lies are flat out lies is somehow fake news hysteria in your strange pink sky world?

You dodged the question. What is a lie in your world?

Pretty scary that someone who can't keep very simple facts straight in their head is setting national policy across the board. Even scarier is all the people that don't even know the difference.

by misquoting

After having the media react to the dozens of times when he said it wrong, he still said this at a conference of Sheriffs a few weeks ago. I believe it's intentional.

"The murder rate in our country is the highest it’s been in 47 years, right?" Trump said. "Did you know that? Forty-seven years. I used to use that -- I’d say that in a speech and everybody was surprised, because the press doesn’t tell it like it is. It wasn’t to their advantage to say that. But the murder rate is the highest it’s been in, I guess, from 45 to 47 years."

I'm sure he has said it correctly a few times, maybe even as far back as the second debate. But which is it ? Is it that hard to keep something as complicated as a "highest one year increase in the rate" in his mind ? Or is it that the simpler (and dishonest) version just sounds so much better to him ? Either way it's bad. It's either an indictment of his intellect or his honesty.

Quoting something that Trump has said many times exactly as he said is honest reporting. The fact that he has on occasion said it correctly is beside the point. In fact in my view, it makes it more questionable, considering the number of times he said it wrong.

Why do you defend him so much ? Is it just that you like the underdog, even when the underdog is evil ? Yes, that's right evil. Anyone that lies as much as Trump (especially to himself) is in my world by definition, at least potentially, evil.

I actually hope all this lying is a planned approach. The alternative is that he is so dumb that all he does is watch/read conspiracy sites and regurgitates their nonsense when the mood takes him. Rather worrying for anyone let alone the most powerful person on the planet.

Trump is like a box of chocolates...
At some times he seems incredibly bumbling and stupid. I call these his "Tommy boy" moments("He's just a big dumb animal, folks!"). And then he turns around and does something that makes me wonder if all the bumbling was a front to make his enemies overreach as they see weakness and attack. Either he's unspeakably cunning when it comes to media and manipulation of a hostile press, or he's the luckiest sonofabitch ever. Over and over he trips and falls into shit but comes out smelling like bourbon and it's Mardi Gras. Weirdest politician ever!
No, I hardly agree with everything he's doing, but a good 50% of it should reverse the death spiral the globalists had this country in and that's good enough for government work!

So an anti globalist can spew lies all over and his anti globalist agenda, which I doubt he has it, covers all the sins. Interesting observation.

You guys just don't get it! You keep coming up with these picky little sins and point out relentlessly that Trump has flaws and foibles. We know! But thanks to your DNC dishonesty, it was this guy or Mrs. FUCKING SATAN!
I'll take a well meaning idiot over an evil harpy bent on our destruction.

Trump is a spoiled brat rich kid who happens to be a great huckster and self promoter. Always has been. He's a terrible manager, which is why he switched from development to brand promotion. I lived in NY metro in the 80's. Trump was considered a joke as a developer. Stumbling from disaster to disaster bailed out by daddies money, more importantly daddies credit line, and most importantly city/state/federal money.

There is nothing new here.

Quigley says

Unless you are a regular invitee to the semi annual koch bro's ultra rich libertarian fund raising/strategy soiree trump is neither well meaning nor an idiot.

You will repent then but it would be too late.

Ha! No, they won't. When the shit wheels come of this shit clown car, they will declare that Trump was never a conservative at all, and no wonder he failed! "Sure", they'll say, "we lost our way, but now we need a REAL conservative to right the ship!".

They have impenetrable cloudy logic on all things political.

Why, just a few scant years ago, Russia was our biggest geopolitical threat, and protectionism was anathema, the stuff of unions.

Remember when Iraq was the defining issue of our era? Anyone opposed was a pussy (liberal)! You're either with us, or against us! Pussies!

Now, the head of the same party thinks "Bush lied, Soldiers died". But it's the Democrats who are to blame!

I fear we will get a new "support our troops, true American" litmus test soon.

The story that burns me up the most about the Iraq war was this one:

Check out "Why We Fight" if you haven't seen it yet, as well.

14   Shaman   2017 Mar 7, 2:13pm

I guess we will see. Still glad we didn't get Clinton. Trump with all his flaws is still at least aligned with the right direction the country needs to go. Trump hasn't divided us, the globalists and Leftists have done that with their pet media corporations singing shrill tunes of imminent destruction! Gradually, as nothing bad happens, their adherents will grow tired of the whole schtick and move on with their lives. It's already happening.

And the thing with Trump being a traitor? It is to laugh! Fake news doesn't prove anything except that the people who believe it are idiots. The media is currently backpedaling as hard as possible on that "charge" as they insist their sources were all crap and there was never any evidence. All because Obama's ass is suddenly swinging in the wind for his Watergate-style election hacks. Democrats do love to accuse opponents of the very misdeeds they commit all the time!

You know what cemented my support for Trump? It was the ridiculous level of opposition from the globalists and Leftists that convinced me he was planning a different course for our flight than straight into the ground like it was obvious the globalists wanted.

This isn't Left vs Right. It's the people vs the owner class/elites. One side wants freedom and personal responsibility and the other wants totalitarian government with special perks for themselves and their friends. It's all power games, but this time the elites lost. Let's hope this is the start of a long series of elite failures.

15   Shaman   2017 Mar 7, 3:20pm

I'm glad you agree with me, Tim. All the focus on race and racial politics has led us to this point. Obama and his Leftists have led us here. Rather than focusing on finding common ground, Leftists are asking to be resegregated by racial/cultural boundaries so that everyone can have their safe space.

MLK is probably rolling over in his grave.

Some psychologists have suggested that this SJW madness is a result of kids growing up in daycares while their parents both work and drop in to helicopter parent whenever the kid got an owie.
This doesn't explain why different races can't seem to get along now. I would imagine that most classes are fully integrated, giving kids exposure to all different types of people from the youngest ages. My daughter's daycare class has as many different colors of beautiful kids as any sampling I've seen. I just hope she doesn't grow up and get infected by the Leftist poison that would make her see her friends as the other.
