GARDAI have launched an investigation after a TV viewer claimed comments made by Stephen Fry on an RTE show were blasphemous.

Independent.ie can reveal that a member of the public reported the allegation to Ennis garda Station following a broadcast of ‘The Meaning of Life’, hosted by Gay Byrne, in February 2015.

Gardaí in Donnybrook have recently contacted the man who made the report and a senior source revealed a full investigation is now due to be carried out.

Under the Defamation Act 2009 a person who publishes or utters blasphemous material "shall be guilty of an offence". They are be liable upon conviction on indictment to a fine not exceeding €25,000.

The specific complaint relates to an interview conducted on 'The Meaning of Life' with Mr Fry. During the show the comedian and writer was questioned about what he might say to God at the pearly gates.

Mr Fry replied: "How dare you create a world in which there is such misery? It’s not our fault? It’s not right. It’s utterly, utterly evil. Why should I respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid god who creates a world which is so full of injustice and pain?"

He went on to say that if he was met by the Greek gods he would accept them quicker because, "they didn’t present themselves as being all seeing, all wise, all beneficent."

He added: "Because the god who created this universe, if it was created by god, is quite clearly a maniac, an utter maniac, totally selfish.

"We have to spend our lives on our knees thanking him. What kind of god would do that?"

A clip of the interview was posted online and it has since been viewed over seven million times.

This is fake news. Irishmen never put down their drinks until there is nothing left or they run out of money.

If you think that's bad, just wait till you say something blasphemous in a Muslim country.

Why should either be tolerable? Do you think Muslim societies started as bad as they are now? No. Religion, both Islam and its predecessors, made Muslim societies and the predecessors of those society so bad. It didn't happen overnight. It happened over hundreds, even thousands, of years.

Accepting lesser evils of religion enables greater evils. Gradients matter.

I would not want to tolerate any crap from any religion. However, we may not always have that choice, in which case accepting the lesser evil would be the best option.

We don't live in a two religion party system world. Accepting one religion allows for more radical religions. Think of it as a tuck-of-war between rationalists and irrationalists. Every small step towards rationality strengthens our side and weakens the theists.

Yes they did. They didn't invent beheadings recently, they had those principles since the beginning of their civilization.

Your problem Dan is you are so blind to the world around you with your hatred for religion, Christianity and America, that you don't understand the world around you and attribute everything wrong.

Dan,
You want me to handle this or have you got it.

This is true. Muslims seek to imitate Mohammed, who murdered his enemies.

Christians, in theory, seek to imitate Jesus, who allowed his enemies to murder him in order save everyone else. I'm not even a believer, but I can see that Jesus was infinitely morally superior to Mohammed.

Wow, your reading comprehension skills need a lot of work.

Muslim societies didn't spring into existence overnight. Islam grew from one asshole to hundreds of millions over many generations. The only reason the seed did not die right away is because the society was already poisoned by religion. Mohammad could never had garner followers in an atheistic, rational society.

Every superstition accepted allows for the next. It's the Broken Window Theory.

Prove it with a rational argument and evidence. I could easily assert the same about you.

Debating Fort Wayne is like shooting homophobic fish in a barrel.

This is true

Ah, but their civilization grew out of a previous civilization that already had religion and beheadings because of religion. It's not like this shit started with Islam. And Islam could never had started if religion in some form or another did not already exist and take root. This is why all religion must be opposed. It creates fertile ground for religions like Islam and Dark Age Christianity.

In theory, not in practice. Just look at any hardcore Christian on this site. Look at Fort Wayne. Do you really think he would imitate Jesus in this matter? Let's ask him.

Fort Wayne, if a burglar intent on killing you broke into your house, would you let him kill you or would you shoot him dead?

Anyone want to take bets? The thing is, Jesus was wrong about a lot of things, and even his most ardent followers know this.
