I was just reading about Lombards recently because I lived on Lombard Street in suburban Chicago as a kid.

Every town in Europe seems to have had a Lombard Street where the pawn shop was located. Which was OK for Christians because it was technically not lending at interest.
I wonder if the Lombards remained a distinct ethnic group as they spread out to open pawn shops across Europe. Can't find any info on that.
