You guys are over-reacting and could benefit from learning more history. Victorian boys wore dresses, including pink.

Here is a photo of a young FDR in a dress, common for his age at the time:

Seriously? What kind of idiot parent says "ok, just in case you're one out of a thousand who suffer from the mental illness called gender dysphoria, we're gonna dress you like the other gender to demonstate that were okey dokey with all this".

Photographer mom says the kid likes to wear dresses, and to dress up as a mermaid or Ironman. Surely there are bigger stories than what a 5yo Canadian wants to wear, and how a photographer gets publicity.

If you want to find fault with Canada, consider the recent motion against "Islamophobia."

Yeah, it was common for his age at that time - BUT, in THIS time. This is child cruelty and mental retardation (on the part of the mother). Sad, sad, sad and it's sad that you are defending it.

That poor kid will definitely suffer a lot from the selfish actions of his mother. She put her virtue signaling ahead of his mental health. He's only a pawn in her game.

Girls otoh suffer almost no stigma from dressing as boys.

Most Canadians don't play American football. Canadians are much more likely to play soccer, and many of the teams are coed. Canadians also make formidable hockey players, and nobody messes with them.

No, please try to keep things in perspective: burning a child with cigarettes would be cruelty; this is merely Canadian.

Right or wrong, he will be ridiculed for this throughout his childhood and adolescents, lowering his social status and confidence, ultimately decreasing his earning potential and his attractiveness to women. His mother just decreased the number of grandchildren she will have. Ultimately, this is a self-correcting problem.

Follow up with the kid in five years, and see if his school mates don't find that picture on the Internet and make fun of him. I'd be shocked if that's not the case. William Golding was an optimist.

Yes, but the lines of who gets abused don't depend on who wore a dress at 5yo. Piggy got abused because he was fat and wore glasses. If this kid grows up to be fat and ugly and wears glasses, he might get teased for any number of pretexts. If he grows up gorgeous, rich, confident, and good at hockey, these photos won't hurt him at all. Again, Canada is a long way from Texas.

Neither does forcing a child to play sports that isn't inclined to or interested in. Same with a lot of other things parents force their children to do.

Not that it matters really, however I didn't say American football....I said football, which for most of the world including Canada means soccer. Doesn't detract from my point, yet it seems to have been misunderstood as though it should matter...which it does not.

Uh, wait - 'forcing' a kid to do something is really just exposing him (or her) to the activity. My daughters didn't WANT to do track, we told them to do it and see how they liked it, it helped that their friends were also there, they sucked at it. They did basketball, they sucked at it. They did volleyball, they sucked at it. I didn't MAKE them continue to play but if they had liked it and been good at it, they would have wanted to continue, at least this way they were exposed to it. My youngest, after all that said she wanted to do swimming, I expected her to suck at it (although she'd been swimming since she was 4 years old) - so my surprise she excelled at it. When she was 4 she didn't want to do swimming either. Sorry, part of my job as a parent was to expose her to things that she would have never experienced if left to her own devices.

Gender Stereotypes

What's wrong with gender stereotypes?

33   Patrick   2017 Jun 4, 7:21pm

Nothing wrong with them, because gender stereotypes are based in biological reality. Recognition and admiration of people who express their gender according to the stereotype was essential in bringing us down to the present day where we have the luxury of even discussing such issues.

The fundamental facts:

* Manly men were better at protecting their wives and children.
* Feminine women were more highly prized by men, and as a result got higher status men to protect and provide for them and their children.

Or from another angle: eggs are expensive, sperm is cheap. Women needed to be choosy because they had a limited number of times they could reproduce, once per year at most. Thus they needed to make the most of those few opportunities by looking good and getting the commitment of a high-status and powerful man. Men did not need to be choosy beyond finding a woman in her fertile years, and did best by mating with as many willing women as possible, selecting only one or a few to favor with commitment and resources.

P N Dr Lo R says

What's wrong with gender stereotypes?

It depends. In Texas and other "red" states, too many boys are expected to play American football, and too many of those kids are bulking up on steroids, and they wear rigid helmets and hit much harder than in Gerald Ford's day. Too many of today's boys get concussons (which they call getting their "bell rung") and brain damage before they can even become adults. That's child abuse, with lifelong consequences. Some boys have died from brain injuries, and others have died from heat stroke. Girls are not expected to play American football, so the institutionalized abuse of boys is based solely on gender stereotypes.

Too many of today's boys get concussons

You're exactly right about that, but I don't think it's limited to Texas. Judge Judy raked a couple of lame-brained men in their 40's who were coaching 10 and 11 year old boys football teams. The plaintiff was arguing that his less experienced players (how much experience does a 10-11 year old have anyway?) had been beaten twice by the defendant's much more experienced players and one of his players had sustained a concussion. She really let him have it and made the point that they were both idiots allowing boys that age to play a contact sport like football--all they're doing is having their egos stroked. It's anybody's guess what the long term ramifications of a concussion at 10-11 is going to have on that youngster's future.
