the Enlightenment. The founders comprised Deists, Christians, agnostics, probably atheists. They had support from Jews, partly because the new republic would allow all citizens to participate regardless of religion.
Judeo-Christian values did help, but only after the separation of church and state. Christianity summoned the Renaissance, and thus the Enlightenment.

The oldest elected body in the world has nothing to do with Christianity - parliament of Iceland was formed when Iceland was pagan. Idea of Democracy much predates Christianity and perhaps has been implemented in spite of Church efforts.

Right there in the Declaration of Independence. There is no doubt where the idea of Democracy, where individual determination comes from. It comes not from secular society, but rather directly from faith in God.
