BART police Officer E. Estrada patrols the Downtown Berkeley BART Station in Berkeley, Calif., on Tuesday, July 18, 2017. A recent report recommended expanding the authority of the independent police auditor to investigate allegations of police misconduct and influence decisions on disciplinary actions.

Sometimes police=thugs - they often beat and shoot innocent bystanders (such as recent case in Minneapolis when an innocent lady was shot), and usually get away with this. That is why we need more police powers, apparently.

Maybe sometimes police = thugs. But thugs = thugs all the time. As it stands now BART passengers suffer much more from thugs than from police.

Passengers should be allowed to carry guns. A few thugs shot will make others think twice. Cheaper than police, do not need to pay police pensions, and does not entail creating a police state.

Good luck with that in our lovely DPRK(alifornia).

I have commuted every day on BART for 20 years. I have never seen a BART police officer at a BART station or on a BART train although I frequently see SFPD officers at BART stations in SF. BART is actually designed to run without "drivers", who have only two jobs - open and close the doors, and announce the stations. Few announce the stations anymore. BART should replace its "drivers" with conductors who carry police radios.

BART should replace its "drivers" with vigilantes who carry M134s.
