...is the exception to free speech.

Chase Strangio, the American Civil Liberties Union lawyer who defended Chelsea Manning, distanced himself from the organization’s defense of Milo Yiannopoulos Wednesday.

“I don’t believe in protecting principle for the sake of principle,” he stated.

On Wednesday, the ACLU announced its lawsuit against the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in defense of Milo Yiannopoulos’ right to free speech. The organization’s decision has raised the ire of progressives, who equate his mockery of social justice warriors to hate speech — including Strangio.

The ACLU, which has defended the First Amendment rights of thousands of individuals and organizations — including the Ku Klux Klan and the Nation of Islam — had finally crossed the line. Strangio claims that Yiannopoulos’ words “exacerbate the many harms that transgender people, people of color, Muslim people, immigrants and others regularly experience.”

His statement (from Stangio's twitter):

Of course, what hateful things Milo has said about Blacks, etc we're not told. This is probably a lawyer who defended defending Nazis. The key to Social Justice is their rabid defense of Tabula Rasa, without which the possible implementation of their racist and sexist goals is impossible.

I have to be highly skeptical of this. The source is thedailycaller.com, which is a well-known propaganda site. When you type "thedailycaller.com" Google autocompletes "fake news". 'Nuff said.

Nonetheless, I'll address the subject matter underneath the allegations.

1. The ACLU is absolutely right to defend the First Amendment rights of the KKK and the Nation of Islam.
2. The ACLU has in the past been wrong. During the Cold War out of fear of being destroyed by the U.S. government, the leaders of the ACLU refused to defend communists. Many high ranking members of the ACLU resigned over this.
3. If -- and that's a big IF -- the ACLU did refuse to defend Milo's free speech rights because his speech was hateful, then that would be wrong. At best, that says the people in the ACLU sometimes make mistakes. It does not mean that the vast majority of the ACLU actions were not correct.

The source is the guy's twitter. It's not about the ACLU, but somebody who is professing to be a member placing his personal principles of Social Justice above the Principles of the ACLU Commitment to the 1st Amendment.

If that is the case, then it is hypocritical on the part of that one individual. However, I need to see the entire conversation in context. The article does not provide that.

That's just plain stupid. No one ever completely embraces every single position of their organization. You need to join up with TBP in the search for a hobby and a life.. .

ACLU should take the "L" out. Their conditional view of liberty is politically motivated.

Okay, I just got told that people join the ACLU who don't care about Free Speech.

It's like joining the NRA for Eddie Eagle but believing guns should be banned.
