Is this good or bad? Currently I'm an database programmer (mostly Oracle; and use Oracle APEX to develop web pages). Supposedly I could eventually move into DBA stuff later if I really wanted to, but that might require 24/7 support, which I don't want to do.

I honestly don't know what any of that means.
I'm just a SQL guy, never had any of my Databases choke or under perform, and I'm always the only guy doing it.
I don't know what you would call the guy that sets up the server, creates data partitions, creates database logs and mdf, and creates the data model, all of the crud sprocs, any custom functions, creates the indexes, optimizes indexes, and programs the code to connect and read and update data.

Then I also try to be the guy that explains to all of the Data Analyst how the field they are proposing is already in the XML as a field they are currently abandoning to add a new field because someone didn't like how the last field name was worded. It might be too confusing for me seeing how I'm the only guy that will ever read it after that meeting.

Salesforce developers are the biggest fucking Morons on the Planet just bellow Liberals.

DBA. I do that too.

I saw that type of thing happen a lot someplace where I used to work. Someone would want something, so it would get built. When the person moved on and/or stopped using it, we were never told, so the thing kept getting maintained. After a while nobody is around to know what the fuck this or that onerous report was for, but we still have a nightly process that's generating a table for them (because the original programmer sucked, and built a report that was so inefficient that it couldn't be run on demand like a normal report would be).

DBA infrastructure stuff is easily outsourced-except for the lead types-in big non IT companies at least.

As far as I can tell, Data Analysts/DBA/Programmer salaries seem to be about the same.

Not an issue in this instance.

Not sure because I've never had a job where I sat on my ass all day. There's a lot of info online about office work vs physical work.
One guy said: For me, a day of physical labor feels like REAL work.
In my experience, a day of manual labor leaves me with more energy at the end of the day. I remember having my best workouts at the gym after a days work at the warehouse. By bedtime, I would easily fall asleep. In fact, I've had the best sleep ever during my employment at the warehouse.

When I was working at an office, I sat on my ass all day, and yet, was always so tired due to all the pointless mental work. I would come home mentally stressed, unable to sleep.

If I were to choose one, it would be no doubt, physical labor.

What kind of work would you prefer?

By time I was 18 I had my own Van, and full set of Flooring tools, I had about 10 custom and designer accounts that paid by the day.
Go do the job, finish show up at the shop get a check when I delivered the COD.

I did that for 12 years. Until I turned 30, by then the big biz lobby found ways to get more and more illegal alien labor.
I was making a fraction at 30 that I was making at 18. Now I had a wife and kids.

Trades are dead in this country. I was just telling the warehouse guy that today. As he was complaining he has to work two jobs.
There's no good opportunities in this country unless you sit on your ass.

Overheard that at least construction wages have been rising again since the increased crackdown on illegal immigration. Wasn't clear by how much, but the trend seems to be there.

Hmmm at 10:05 I got an email from a head hunter for Data analyst, then at 11:26 I got one for Salesforce developer.

My Resume online says I'm nothing of the sort. Spite the emails claiming they found my Resume on line and think I would be a fit.

Seems to me Big Browser is listening to everything we say even on forum groups.

Patrick do you still have Google analytics on this site?

Nasty Stuff!

11   zzyzzx   2017 Aug 17, 10:57am

I found the job ad for the position. It's something that I could easily do, and I already know one of the about 5 other people in the group.
if there is a downside here, I think it's the whole getting a new boss.

Our bodies are meant to work. If we only work our minds, our bodies are unsatisfied and won't let us have the peace that comes from an honest day's labor.
If your job doesn't allow for manual labor, the best thing to do is hit the gym sometime that day.

Or commute to work on a bicycle. Try it sometime!

14   Tenpoundbass   2017 Aug 17, 12:52pm

I work 20 minutes away driving on i95 average speed 80mph.

It's a 45 minute to an hour commute when the traffic is between 30 to 40 mph.

zzyzzx try to find out the salary bands for "programmer" and "analyst" sometimes that shit is used to put people into a narrower (cheaper) band and hold them at a lower rate.

16   Tenpoundbass   2017 Aug 17, 12:59pm

I have about 4 or 5 months to finish up the 5 projects I originally was employed to do. I'm currently working on for the company I'm currently at.
I am leaving to market my own technologies after that. When I came here 3 years ago, they had a ton of integration modernization work for me to do. I told the owner I had my own Middleware and Integration tools that could swing data to and from any ERP, or CRM system while holding a Prototype virtualized data that the schema can be updated in real time on the fly to accommodate schema changes. My changes take less than a minute. I then have to wait for the other teams to do their part. Sometimes for months.

SysPro, Salesforce, Goldmine, my shit eats their lunch.

I need a Businessman to get me my 5 Billion Dollar IPO.

My friends were in that business...That's some back breaking work and hard on the knees... those guys were strong.

What is your title now? If "developer" then "analyst" sounds like demotion.

That's some back breaking work and hard on the knees... those guys were strong.

I never moved around on the nubs of my knees. I was more of a sprawler, I would crab around on my feet and my hand.
By time I left the throbbing pain in my Thumb was enormous, because most of my weight as I would toss my self side to side, would land on my thumb.
Especially when you use the Kicker to stretch carpet, the thumb is used to press the carpet onto the tack strip before you lift the kicker back up.

I was strong as a bull back then. Now I look at furniture in rooms, and just think of the times I would just march in a room and start unscrewing things, and picking it up turning it on its side then carefully getting it through the door jamb. I could clear out any room with a willing helper in 20 minutes.

Last year I took all of the Furniture out of my office/den, and it took me two days to get it out, and two weeks to get all back in

Walk in anyone's apartment, house, or office I would have to move all of that furniture to do the job.
What killed me at the time, furniture moving company would get paid double to move the Furniture and put it back than what I make for the whole job.
.
Some jobs paid enough for the effort some didn't, lied and said it was empty.

Many times people would meet me at the door and say they were up all night getting ready and helped me.
They took everything out of the Closets and put it on the Beds, and everything out of the China Cabinet and put it on the Dinning room table.
Which I then had to move again. I normally left the china in the cabinet, unless the cabinet was too flimsy to make the trip.

Yeah, it would kill me today to do that like I did back then. You have to stay in it and do it as you age. It's not something you can go back to after you left when you get older.
I have friends in their 50's and 60's that still do it. They could break me in half, I wont lie about that.

Sr Spec Software Design is current job title. Now that I have met some of the people and learned more about the new group, yes definitely a demotion. It's more of a placeholder until I get better qualifications to work on more programming type stuff on the same project.

Hey, if they have any node.js work, take that! It's a hot topic, and then you can also help improve patrick.net.

I'm already going through this:
https://www.udacity.com/course/front-end-web-developer-nanodegree--nd001
Perhaps I can look into that later when I have the time.

If there is anything else I like about the potential new job is that I have already met or otherwise know the people that I will be working with, and they also hate the new project (yes, even the boss).

Update: I managed to get myself off the project where they wanted me to be a Data Analyst (which apparently actually really meant doing data entry and going to a lot of boring, useless meetings, and working a shitload of unpaid overtime).

I do a fair bit of both in my job. More manual labor turning wrenches than skull sweat sorting logic or troubleshooting systems, but it’s all related and keeps me interested most days.
