Look at the value of Bitcoin. Check this out, Bitcoin Investment Trust (GBTC). 2 years ago it was about $30. Today, it is bout $720.

I blew off bitcoin 3 years ago because I was sure it was a scam, like all the rest of the get quick schemes. Now, I see bitcoin headlines, see it mentioned alongside gold, oil, and mutual funds as common investment options. So, coming from someone who has no clue about investing anything, why is bitcoin a bad idea now or is it?

To me the problem with Bitcoin is that it has no physical backing, nor does it have a standing army to enforce its value. Right now it's just riding on hype (IMO). The dollar has come to lack physical backing but very much has the a standing army to enforce its value. Anyone who wants to dispute this position should review what has happened to anyone who has tried to dump the dollar from being valid currency.

You don't need to dump the dollar for bitcoin to continue to rise. I balked at buying it at $40. Am I buying now? Hell no...but people were screaming bubble at $400...now it's at $4000. How far do you think it falls?
