Scientists have engineered an antibody that attacks 99% of HIV strains and can prevent infection in primates.

It is built to attack three critical parts of the virus - making it harder for HIV to resist its effects.

The work is a collaboration between the US National Institutes of Health and the pharmaceutical company Sanofi.

Unfortunately, the vaccine needs to be politically correct before release, which will take at least another 20 years of development.

$75 a year. It would be cheaper to fly to kenya , take a safari, get the pills for a year than buy here. Interesting. One of collegaues was from India and his mom had cancer and she get free treatment in his home state for her-free-very state of the art treatment apparently.
I wonder if the whole world lives off our rates?

try it in San Francisco and West Hollywood. It's where both aids and gays are in abundance... pure coincidence of course.

HIV = gay plague.

Actually no. In Africa and many third world countries, hetrosexual transmission, blood transfusions(reduced now) and even needles etc are all major contributions.

Either way, it is a disease that needs a cure. Weather gays have it or straight or children who got it in the womb from mother or breastfeeding -it does not matter.

In Sexual Ecology: AIDS and the Destiny of Gay Men, Gabriel Rotello, a gay man of the left, explains that the virus doesn't distinguish between gay or straight, only the ideal environment. The virus had been present for decades, but it wasn't until the advent of the sexual revolution and Stonewall speifically in 1969 that the proper environment presented itself. The huge escalation of promiscuity during the 1970's, unprecedented in the West both in this country and Europe, with sometimes hundreds of partners in a year and by 1980 immune systems weakened by repeated bouts of exposures to other STD's and palliatives, the environment was perfect for the later identified HIV to begin its destruction, thus the rash (no pun intended) of deaths beginning in mid-1981. In Africa the ideal environment was provided as men left their villages and families for the better jobs in the cities and began hooking up with prostitutes that it became a heterosexual plauge. A huge stigma against homosexuality still existed in Africa, so many cases that were really from gay hook-ups were still likely to be reported as straight. And as mentioned, blood transfusions and nursing babies contributed their part.

AIDS became and still is the most politicized disease in history. By the late 80's, this was hugely (or as some like to say here "yugely") embarassing to the gay community and by extension to the left which rejected the historical practices such as partner contact to get a handle on the deaths and wouldn't close the bath-houses. By the early 90's, it was voiced about that there would soon be an outbreak in the larger heterosexual community comparable to that in the gay, that everyone was at equal risk. In 1992, another gay man of the left, Michael Fumento, wrote a book titled "The Myth of Heterosexual AIDS" and was instantly a pariah in his own community, but 25 years of inconvenient hindsight has proven him correct.

The interesting thing in animals is they also have their own version of the AIDS virus. For examples cats have feline HIV. However lions in the wild have developed immunity-probably swept through them and over generations, the body developed immunity. However domestic cats do not have immunity and die. I wonder if the social conservatives will call feline HIV the gay plague sent by God?/

Fascinating stuff!

Here's another interesting observation by the author of The Ecology of AIDS: during the first wave of deaths, promiscuity voluntarily declined for awhile. But later, when the first promise of maybe a "cure" appeared sometime in the late 80's or early 90's, what did gay people do? They resumed their promiscuous behavior of having many partners to the extent that the virus once again exploded in the community. That's why today, when we have young adults who don't remember a world without AIDS and it has become somewhat manageable over the long term, promiscuity has once again ramped up, resulting in periodic outbreaks of other STDS as well, specifically HPV (humanpapilomavirus), which in many ways is worse than HIV. There is no test for HPV so there's no way to know you or your partner's status. There is a vaccine that many in the medical community encourage young people to begin taking early on, but who knows who is on it, or if it is effective. HPV is overwhelmingly the result of oral, anal and penile cancers.

Ryan White
Another example of the politicization of AIDS. A few years into the 80's when it became known that hemophiliacs, such as Ryan, who contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion, and babies born to HIV positive mothers were also at risk for AIDS there was, I've forgotten now, either a print story or TV documentary put on by I think a group of Catholics who suggested a special dispensation of mercy and concern for whom they naively described as "innocent victims", as opposed to those who had many 15 minute hook-ups with complete strangers and went on their way (the latter wasn't said, but anyone could draw the conclusion). The term "innocent victims" was instantly denounced by gay spokesmen as being judgmental and forbidden to be used in any context in discussing AIDS--in effect, anyone with AIDS was an innocent victim. This is about the time it came to be suggested that AIDS would soon break out in the larger population, which of course we know never happened. Another term whose use became forbidden in discussing AIDS was "gay bowel syndrome", which accurately described a particular set of symptoms seen repeatedly by doctors of gay men, but which again carried the stigma of compliticity in the patient's problem. At every step, gay spokesmen have dictated what is proper and not proper in the discussion of this plague. Whether it's acceptable or not, I would still describe Ryan White as an innocent victim. David Horowitz expands on how radical's contributed to AIDS deaths:

In western nations, yes Gays have ahigher prevelance. But in south africa- it is different. Close to 20% of South africans live with HIV/AIDS and in some regions it is close to 40% .

Surprisingly many countries in the southern part of africa have the highest rates. SWaziland has clsoe to 30%. Botswana, namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia all have the world's highest rate of HIV -in the high to mid teen percent of the population. I wonder if it is because of sexual practices-in quite a few of those places a man can marry multiple women-but so it is in Muslim nations-they don't have high rates. Interesting to say the least.

Could be due to prostitution.

"HIV = gay plague."

To whoever posted this comment:

This may have been a comment with the intention to offend, but that doesn't make them a mental midget as this is largely true. The more rough sex is, the more likely HIV is transmitted. "Standard" vaginal intercourse has an extremely low transmission rate while anal has a much higher one. Transmissions through needles and blood transfusions are a tiny number. Of course this will also be an issue for heterosexual couples into rough(er) sex.

In any case HIV will likely be 100% curable and/or preventable in the near future. And the HIV virus has been used by researchers in mutated forms as a carrier to successfully combat cancer and other problematic cells. It may have a use after all.

Simple answer. This happened because we need more free trade. We should be able to buy drugs from anywhere. The restrictions we place on free trade, and the loopholes we allow these scumbag drug companies to use is the problem.

Agreed. Actually other companies were ready to step in and produce it for a fraction of the price. Of course drug laws would have made it complicated to import legally in large batches for profit.

That's how it began. And those damned hippies and liberals sure made sure it spreads out to the rest of the world!
