Why weren't we hearing about this stuff 20yrs ago?
Was it not happening? (i find this impossible to believe)
Were people not talking about it? (possible)
Was there far less public outrage and therefore not a big deal (possible)

It's against laws for sure, but it's these laws and the supposed stigmatization of this type of behavior that likely made the young man try to commit suicide. Almost with 95% certainty, any straight male at 17 years old would have intercourse with an older woman (30 and under), assuming some level of attractiveness. This is pretty much indisputable.
There of course is a line where it's totally out of bounds. But in this case it's really just nature doing nature. I'm sure you won't like my take, but do a blind poll of any 17 year old, straight young man, with a photo of who they could "get" with. 95% of them would probably say yes in this case assuming she's attractive (that photo is not the best - the teeth and sunglasses give me a bad vibe).

He was 17, I think he would have tried suicide even if it was with a schoolmate. When your a 17yo and get your first taste of a woman it's all consuming, then he had to go years without, its must have been really hard.P

with cell phones, communication is easier and more private than its ever been. We have seemingly endless ways to get in contact.
Many teachers are putting their numbers and emails on the syllabus. What starts off with an email or two about the class can with time lead to humor, an occasional weekend text, increased dialogue and the slope gets more and more slippery.
When I think about this again, I don’t think this was as prevalent before cell phone /email because you actually had to have balls to make a connection.
