A math education professor at the University of Illinois argued in a newly published book that algebraic and geometry skills perpetuate “unearned privilege” among whites.

Rochelle Gutierrez, a professor at the University of Illinois, made the claim in a new anthology for math teachers, arguing that teachers must be aware of the “politics that mathematics brings” in society.

“On many levels, mathematics itself operates as Whiteness. Who gets credit for doing and developing mathematics, who is capable in mathematics, and who is seen as part of the mathematical community is generally viewed as White,” Gutierrez argued.

Gutierrez also worries that algebra and geometry perpetuate privilege, fretting that “curricula emphasizing terms like Pythagorean theorem and pi perpetuate a perception that mathematics was largely developed by Greeks and other Europeans."

Math also helps actively perpetuate white privilege too, since the way our economy places a premium on math skills gives math a form of “unearned privilege” for math professors, who are disproportionately white.

“Are we really that smart just because we do mathematics?” she asks, further wondering why math professors get more research grants than “social studies or English” professors.

Further, she also worries that evaluations of math skills can perpetuate discrimination against minorities, especially if they do worse than their white counterparts.

“If one is not viewed as mathematical, there will always be a sense of inferiority that can be summoned,” she says, adding that there are so many minorities who “have experienced microaggressions from participating in math classrooms… [where people are] judged by whether they can reason abstractly.”

To fight this, Gutierrez encourages aspiring math teachers to develop a sense of “political conocimiento,” a Spanish phrase for “political knowledge for teaching.”

Gutierrez stresses that all knowledge is “relational,” asserting that “Things cannot be known objectively; they must be known subjectively."

The technology god is totally independent of math.
What kind of name is Gutierrez?
“Things cannot be known objectively; they must be known subjectively."

Nothing exist unless I agree!

When even your so-called intellectuals are dummass, where do you go from there? How do you un-fuck that degree of fuck uppedness?

She's not an intellectual. She's a professor of "Math education" who obviously is not that good at Math.

It's not perfect, but having Calculus as a gateway course for people that want to be engineers or doctors makes a lot of sense. The system might have been designed by white Europeans, but that doesn't mean it's unfair to minorities.

I guarantee you that even most minority individuals are ultimately happy that their doctor was smart enough to make it through those gateway Math courses. It's not a perfect measure of intelligence, but to some extent, being able to do math reflects some analytical and problems solving skills as well as the ability to follow instructions.

I'd bet anything that lady was basically an education major with a minimal amount of Math classes (above the 100 level) under her belt. Probably PHD in Education, with some kind of emphasis in teaching elementary school teachers how to teach Math. The highest level Math classes she took, made her feel like less of a special snowflake, and she's still butthurt.

You are talking of an entire populace who have never planted a seed, hammered a roof, got their hands in the grease to fix their cars, or otherwise done any manual labor. They are dealing constantly with abstract ideas, pretty much to the exclusion of everything else. The most objective things they deal with in their lives in the hot and cold taps in the shower in the morning.

That’s how you get to this:
https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/more-on-white-men-of-academia-student-and-self-evaluation_us_593a8204e4b0b65670e56963 “Objectivity,” for example, frames a white male subjectivity as the norm (thus “objective”), rendering racialized (non-white) and genderized (non-male) subjectivity as the “other,” as lacking credibility.

How do you fix it? I don’t know. I guess Mao would send them to retake contact with popular masses.

Let's say we build an AI in a robot, observing the world, then will she say it is automatically biased and subjective?
Maybe that's the solution, though I doubt it would convinced them.

That certainly sounds like unearned privilege to me. Would she perhaps prefer that bridges, buildings, etc. in predominantly nonwhite areas be designed by engineers who are not racialized (non-white) and genderized (non-male); but completely subjective and do not understand either algebra or geometry?

Her kind is the reason for the term “Libtard,” and represents that term accurately! When someone is so Liberal, they are actually mildly retarded with respect to the real world, they are a Libtard. We have a few on this site. Wave, boys!

But she is not liberal (Liberalism is a political philosophy or worldview founded on ideas of liberty and equality.) She is Marxist and more precisely Maoist, a cultural revolution. Economic Marxism failed horribly, so lets try cultural Marxism.

Did this kind of thinking started when more women got on campus?

Yes Marxism relies on the superiority of the dialectic to realism.
So for example, communists would insist people MUST be equal, regardless of whether they are or not. They killed millions trying to force their notion of fairness onto reality.

You can recognize the same thing going on here: women and people of color MUST be equal, independent of whether they actually are or not. (ad I'm not claiming they aren't). All differences with that ideal MUST be the result of bias and unfair treatment. Reality must adapt and if we need to lower the bar in math, so be it.

Not even. She's from the department of curriculum and instruction.

Gutierrez has earned a Ph.D., Curriculum and Instruction, from the University of Chicago, 1995, an M.A., Curriculum and Instruction, from the University of Chicago, 1995, and a B.A., Human Biology, from Stanford University, 1990.

Mathematics was very hard on her self esteem.

the damage affirmative action has caused.

BTW, if you think IQ is the result of "studying", check out the Eskimo's score.

I think we need a big red label, featuring of course the hammer and sickle, on all airplanes, trains, buses, cars, boats, etc designed by engineers educated using her pedagogy,"Socially Justice Approved designed and manufactured by nonracialized (non-white) and nongenderized (non-male) engineers and people of craft with a subjective understanding of algebra, geometry, calculus and engineering principles. Ride knowing you are advancing social justice and compulsory equality."
It goes almost without saying that I would not alone in shunning such transportation. I imagine SJWs would also shun them, but, with the subterfuge that they had to ride in white male objectively engineered vehicle to protest the indecency of such.
16   Heraclitusstudent   2017 Oct 26, 11:00am

Either that or they will insist everyone rides the subjective math planes.
"What's that? You're scared? You racist sexist bigot!"

Nonsense

"...fretting that 'curricula emphasizing terms like Pythagorean theorem and pi perpetuate a perception that mathematics was largely developed by Greeks and other Europeans.'"

"IT WAS! DEAL WITH IT! You can't ignore the history of accomplishment simply because you don't like the skin color of the achievers! The truth is: People with white skin brought about a disproportionate amount of discovery and invention - and it wasn't because of their skin color, but because of the culture in which they worked. That's just the record of history. There's nothing intrinsically racist, sexist or homophobic about pointing that out."

He probably bought Hillarys book too.
