We’ve long suspected that many Illinois Democrats would tax sunshine and bakery scents if they could. Look at how Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle went after soda by the ounce. Our advice: Enjoy what you can while you can, because you never know what’s next. The beverage tax (soon to be history, thankfully) seems a nuisance compared to a nasty corollary we saw recently employed by Democrats in Springfield: It’s a disturbing worldview, but this is the political pattern in Illinois: Do everything to benefit those who can deliver money and campaign muscle. Everyone else, including most taxpayers and employers, can get lost. Our example today is a pro-union bill in the Democrat-controlled ...

IL needs its own version of Patnet. It's a shit show of a state. If you even want to call it one.

Very interesting article. Thanks for posting.
If I was Amazon I would not bother going to Illinois for HQ2. Lots of business friendly states to pick from.

I'd generally agree, but here in IL, politicians are easily bought. So Amazon could get what it wants anytime here in IL with just a little money thrown at it. I'm saying this a little sarcastically, but honestly now that I'm typing it out, Amazon being able to easily bribe the IL government at anytime is actually a benefit to them.

Yeah. IL has the highest proeprty taxes in the antion. But guess what the speaker of the house-the all powerful Mike madigan does on the "side". Why , you can guess-he runs a property tax reduction company where corporations go to him, pay him a big amount and he goes to bat for them to the localities and reduces their property taxes. yeah while he controls the purse strings for the whole state-like anyone is going to say no when he knocks on the door. Oh and if you thought -where is the justice system-his daughter is the Attorney general of the whole state-yup.
Why does this state keep voting democrats?? High taxes, high corruption, high property taxes and nothing in return. Oh now they wnat to throw you in jail for fighting unions.

Amazon is making a massive long term, irreversible commitment to it's HQ2. Do they want to get involved in dealing with corrupt politicians and greedy unions who will no doubt squeeze Amazon for all they can till the end of time? Amazon needs to do what it does best, and that is concentrating on developing their business. I think they should just go to a business friendly state and save themselves the headaches.

It's for the poor. Think about them.

Blah, blah, blah. The headline is a complete lie, of course.

I was with you until this line. IL has been wrecked by both parties. It's had a Republican Governor more often than not over the last 40 years and nothing changes. Big Jim Thompson was as corrupt as any Democrat...

Illinois is the land of corrupt politicians. Clearly, the state is democrat and union controlled. I fear California following on the footsteps of Illinois. So far they are killing us with taxes on everything. They just raised the gas tax again, and now a gallon is in the low $3.00's. The money ends up in the pockets of government pensions and blood sucking unions.
If California was like Texas, we would be the 8th wonder of the world.

Depends on which county you're in.

You mean except for the leader of the State? I would think most people would call his party the one that controls the state.

They raised the gas tax for the whole state with more to come. I doubt if there is any county in California where a gallon is below $3.00.
Does not hurt me much as I only drive hybrids and electrics. Though, it won't be long before they come at me with guns blazing.

Any IL guys catch this classic in the making? We're just about a year away from the election and this type of shit has been all over network tv for months now. Both sides and the dems don't even have an official candidate. Hell I've heard of interest from some Rebubs putting up a primary challenger to Rauner. Next year is going to suck if you watch any network tv. Although I suppose the local affiliates we be jizzing their pants over the ad revenue.

I'll 100% agree that both sides governors have been absolutely rancid. That said, similar to the president, governors for the most part have to deal with what's handed to them from the house and senate. They cannot operate like a dictator. And I know you know that, so please don't take that as me talking down to you.

They can either fall in line with it or fight it like Rauner just did. I think what Rauner did was stupid and caused more harm. But the dems had the ability to end the budget battle in year 1. About the only thing it showed was that IL democrats don't have much confidence in their own legislation when it takes 3 years to get a budget when they had a veto override the whole time.

I honestly don't have much of an idea how to solve IL problems. The current set up and people in charge though aren't getting the job done and they haven't in the past. Whether it's Rauner as a Republican governor or the dems in the house and senate. I fear IL may be the first state in modern history to fail economically.

Right now Chicago is bringing some higher paying jobs and the people moving out aren't necessarily a negative at this point. So we're losing people, but I'm not sure we're losing much tax revenue. That said, the coming tax increases to continue to fund the pensions, and believe me they're 100% coming, can result in the exodus going parabolic with middle to upper middle class fleeing. I predict IL income taxes will hit double digits in the next 5-10 years. I really don't see a way around it.

Tell me which party votes for tax increases and doe snot touch the unions at all. By unions I don't mean coal workers or workers in dangerous jobs-but fat slobs shuffling paper or other such dumb jobs?

You'll have to be more specific. Let's look at individual bills

I've heard it's going to be the most expensive governor's race ever. Media must be salivating.

It seems the root cause of the problems are government pensions and unions. Same problem in other democrat controlled states.
If these states were a corporation, they would have been out of business a long time ago. Government is the only situation where unions can thrive.

Exhibit A, why the democrats get re-elected.

Exactly--Dem voters like to look at facts and data. Republican voters look at memes.
