New: moderators per topic

By Patrick following x   2017 Nov 5, 7:59pm 7,088 views   767 comments   watch   quote     share

At the suggestion of the late Turtledove I'm trying to separate the site into distinct topics with a moderator for each topic.
#patnet

The first moderator is Iwog, who is in charge of Investing.

Currently, the only power a moderator has is ability to delete comments in that topic. But soon (like within the next week) I hope to implement these other abilities:

ability to delete whole posts in the topic
set or edit "About ${topic}" page
acceptance or rejection of posts waiting for moderation in topic
acceptance or rejection of comments waiting for moderation in topic
ability to free jailed comments in topic
user blacklist by ip or username for that topic
user whitelist for that topic (only those users would be allowed to comment)
ability to set a background image for the topic, and color scheme
ability to set up own donation link for the work

Anyone care to moderate a specific topic? @Dan8267 would you like #scitech or #science?

#patnet

What if I just go back to generating random combinations of words for non-registered users, like WineHorror or CatClimber?

Much better.

Agree with Iwog, this would help distinguish comments.

@Patrick

So you have the ignore feature and while most are too dumb to use, some of us have figured out that it works. However, some trolls will log out to read your posts, grab text in a quote, and then log back in, paste and respond. This imo should be an automatic ban. I know you’re hoping to change the tone of the site, and allowing what is basically harassment will change it for the worse. Just my .02

That way you don’t have to focus on the message, and can keep your focus on the messenger instead. This way, if you know it’s a liberal, you can disregard their post before even reading it and get straight to the personal attacks. If it’s someone you feel will help you fight the liberals, then you can support them. Very productive use of your time!

Not my point. It would allow you at a glance to know who you're speaking to, instead of having to filter through all the previous comments, to figure out which numeric value certain anonymous people are.

#12 on the NIIP per capita basis.

Singapore, Norway, Hong Kong (one of these is not like the others...) are in the first tier.

Switzerland, Taiwan, Luxembourg in the 2nd.

Netherlands ~ Germany are in the 3rd tier of non-shambling economies.

What does it matter if the person posting the content is an alias you’re unfamiliar with, familiar with, or even a bot?

For all you know dan32467 and OnVacation are the same person. You just really need to know which political team they’re aligned with so you know who to support and who to bash?

I agree, but it's difficult to implement in an automated way.

Please mark uncivil comments as uncivil.

I've been thinking I should just ban the word "you" to try to keep people talking about issues and not each other.

How hard would that be?

I’ve seen other forums exterminate trolls by first banning their IP address, and then have the moderators ban them on site. It’s not like he’s hard to spot. Pretty much all he does is personal attacks. You can have Free Speech and ban people who resort to personal attacks simultaneously. Personally, I feel it strengthens Free Speech, to eliminate personal attacks, and you guys keep saying that you feel that ‘the other side ‘ is attempting to restrict your speech...nothing is more restrictive than having someone attack you every time you post. Who wants to subject themselves to that?

With his most recent alias or two, I simply put them on ignore, and it works. Until he logs out, copy’s my post , logs back in, responds with a personal attack, and then has one of his buddies who is salty because they have no thoughts or ideas of their own, quote it all. What is the value in allowing that on your site?

You have been dreaming up ways to improve and expand the site for years. Quit pussy footing around, drain the Swamp. Man up, put your foot down, and just do it. I understand you don’t want to waste all your time babysitting these “people”, but at some point it’s going to have to be done. A high volume of trolls and useless inane posts have Zero value, if you want to improve the site, put an end to it.

Over time you’ve hooked some very interesting and intelligent people here at Patnet, but your retention rate sucks. Maybe that’s a function of time wrt the sites original purpose (mortgage debt bubble) fading interest, or maybe, it’s a function of halfwits grabbing the mic and committing discussion forum jihad LULULULULULU.

That’s my .03

—————

Which is why I suggested going full anon but some of you seem to really dislike that idea.

The sense of community some claim you get from knowing usernames has some value on Facebook or a small message board where you kinda get to know the people

If you want to get large like Reddit, then the usernames are absolutely irrelevant, it’s only the content in the comments that has value. And it’s friendlier with all strangers that you have no connection to, people seem more polite. If you know everyone it’s inevitable you’re going to make a judgement either “hey I like this guy, he’s muh friend “, or “man I hate this fucking nitwit, he never has anything funny or valuable to add, he just disrupts and attacks everyone else”

Not true at all. People like you often use ad hominem when you can't respond or answer a question. In this very thread I've had to delete posts by you that were nothing but childish attacks, accusations of a granny porn addiction, etc.

Being anonymous forces people like yourself to address what is said instead of who is saying it. So obviously you're not going to like it.

Patrick, how should we address people just tagging their threads #someRandomTag to escape moderation and post whatever they want unfiltered by filth? For instance I notice threads that should be #housing but they are tagged #misc.

I think we should give mods the ability to re-categorize threads by their actual category. I actually do want to help you keep this board SFW. Help clean the place up.

See, right here is a prime example. You had the opportunity to address what was being said, and you passed it up entirely, to solely post about Iwog. Why do you think that is?

I think the reason that people avoid answering questions is because they’re at least smart enough to see that an honest answer may reflect poorly on them, or worse still, force them to think and change their mind.

You know what’s much simpler? To talk about the person instead, and toss in a stupid emoji.

Patrick made a horrible choice to have you moderate anything. You’re a petulant child

Childish attacks? You posted Anthony Weiner's dick outline and granny fetish porn on Patrick's site which showed up as thumbnails on the front page. Was I lying? I wasn't the only one complaining about "Iwog's granny porn fetish". It makes the site completely unsafe for anyone browsing on a work network.

Not acceptable. I refuse to participate in any thread that Goran is moderating and I think allowing him any control here was a mistake.

However if you're going to let Goran moderate the #politics tag, I'd like the right to tag my own threads whatever I wish.

I want to help Patrick have a site that attracts an audience that isn't just trolls and shit stirrers.

I don't actually want to moderate anyone's content. In fact I have yet to moderate anyone's content unlike you. However the reality is, when guys like you post softcore porn, it's hurting the Patrick's site because most users will shy away. There's a reason why the largest communities on the net have rules against it. I thought you said you met Patrick and were his friend. Why do you want to turn his website into a shit show? I haven't met Patrick since I no longer live in the Bay Area, but I do wish this community well since I've been a member for a very long time. Don't you wish the same?

If Patrick doesn't care, then continue with your unmoderated posting. But you have to realize guys like you are hurting the site and the membership growth potential.

I like to get to the bottom of intentional vague posts , to find the truth.

If I post something and someone is less than 100% clear on what I’m saying, I will always answer their questions for the sake of clarity.

My biggest pet peeve is people who do the opposite: hide behind vagaries to muddy the waters. Did you never learn to ask and answer who, what, where, why , when?
