New: moderators per topic

By Patrick following x   2017 Nov 5, 7:59pm 17,662 views   767 comments   watch   quote     share

At the suggestion of the late Turtledove I'm trying to separate the site into distinct topics with a moderator for each topic.
#patnet

The first moderator is Iwog, who is in charge of Investing.

Currently, the only power a moderator has is ability to delete comments in that topic. But soon (like within the next week) I hope to implement these other abilities:

ability to delete whole posts in the topic
set or edit "About ${topic}" page
acceptance or rejection of posts waiting for moderation in topic
acceptance or rejection of comments waiting for moderation in topic
ability to free jailed comments in topic
user blacklist by ip or username for that topic
user whitelist for that topic (only those users would be allowed to comment)
ability to set a background image for the topic, and color scheme
ability to set up own donation link for the work

Anyone care to moderate a specific topic? @Dan8267 would you like #scitech or #science?

#patnet

*sigh* What you don't understand @Patrick is that CiC WANTS to make you ban him again. Just watch his behavior increase in the same profile as before

Enough with the whining. Trying to get somebody expelled from a forum for excercising their 1st amendment right is pretty much leftoid playbook.

Then why are you whinging about the exercising of it right now? Snowflake much? Sad.

It's not that bad. Except CiC/Ironman/Sniper. He is that bad. His personal need for negative attention might sink Patnet.

Please mark every single attack of his as uncivil.

*sigh* What you don't understand @Patrick is that CiC WANTS to make you ban him again. Just watch his behavior increase in the same profile as before. You're indulging a nihilist who's only purpose is to defile things. you're desperate enough to ignore it for a while and then you'll learn the same lesson again. Do you trul think he's acting in good faith? Really? REALLY? REALLY??????

OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least somebody understands his motivation.

That's like saying water is wet. Conservatives are cowards. Alt- righters are lying traitors. These truths are self-evident.

This is a quote that should not be in jail. It would be a shame to delete it. In fact it should be put in the best comments as it's going to be prophetic.

Patrick deserves to have the site he wants. I would never claim to suggest that he needs to follow my suggestions.

That being said, I sadly must join Dan and abandon the website to the trolls. They can have their circle jerk now and Goran deserves the job. He's a lying vile piece of shit and he'll fit right in. The only reason I stuck around was because Patrick emailed me and asked me to moderate, however I'm going to decline that now because having Goran moderate the politics forum is untenable and despite several well-liked people agreeing with me, I guess he's here to stay.

Peace everyone.

If you feel the need to censor the one sentence calling Goran a liar, then fine, but the rest of the quote is down right historic. I suspect that with Iwog gone readership will plummet and patrick.net will become yet another alt right echo chamber. Looking at the articles on the index page, it looks like this has already happened.

By the numbers, it has been an alt-right echo chamber for some time. That is one reason that the arguments from the right have become quite weak. It's too easy for them to just make a blubbery post and get support from like minded people. By post count it will go that way soon.

Seriously, if you miss all his TDS threads and Trump rants, you're free to start them yourself. If you don't like the look of the index page, do something about it, or stop complaining.

Start some new threads for discussion.

@Goran I still have to create that interface. Know any node.js? No problem if no, I'll do it this weekend.

I use PHP/HTML/JQuery to create data visualization. I'd be willing to learn node to help out and gain a new skill and probably could pick it up quickly but I wouldn't want to give you garbage code right now. Sorry man.

If you know javascript at all, then node.js is just more of the same but on the server side. See if you can basically understand the code:

https://github.com/killelea/node.patrick.net/blob/master/node/patrick_net.js

I'd be grateful for any help. So much to do, so little time.

@Sniper Seems to work for me. For example, hit http://patrick.net/user/BorderPatrol

Does it not work for your, or do you want the next link on the top of the page too?

2 jobs, womyn, kid and an active sports/workout schedule suck the time out of the day ;) I won't be able to jail uncivil/illegal comments in time. If Patrick is ok with a hands off mod sure, but that likely defeats the purpose of mods in the first place. What about @Strategist bob, or curious2?

That would be great. I think the best way is just trying things out. Node has a great command line where you can do that (called the REPL). Just paste things in and see what happens.

Very happy to answer any questions!

Based on what? I haven’t read any posts that sound particularly like him. If there are, then they are very few and far between. Him and Dan have both clearly left for all intents and purposes (maybe temporarily, maybe not) and this site is all the more boring for it.

What I was talking about was in the search of users. If you click on this:

https://patrick.net/users
Only one page of users comes up, there is no "next" button to see additional users. There are more than one page of users, right?

Also, if you go to that same page and type "anon" in the search box, a list of anon**** users comes up, but it's only one page and no "next" button. There are definitely more than one page of "anons" now. Here is the link:

https://patrick.net/users?user_name=anon You'll see there is only one page, with no "next" link.

Also if you bring up this page:

https://patrick.net/users
and click to sort one of the columns, you still only have one page of results without a "next" button to go to the next page.

Thanks @mell !

You are now the moderator of #investing. Currently your superpowers are only the ability to delete #investing comments and to ban users from #investing for a day at a time, but more are coming soon.

All I'm hoping for is fewer personal attacks and more real discussion about the topics.

If you think either of the Paul’s are just GOP republicans like McCain or McConnell, you should probably do some research on their actual policy platforms.

On that note I noticed that Ron Paul is being attacked quite a bit lately on Facetwat when he promotes his RP institute for liberty posts because he sounds 50% like a Democrat these days. Rand is a tad bit closer to the Republican conservatives.

Actually, I've gained quite a lot by having moderators. More eyes scanning for personal attacks and shooting them on sight.

As long as I think they're being fair about it, it doesn't have to be perfect. All it has to do is cut down on most of the interpersonal crap and leave most of the legitimate comments about real issues.

I think moderators of all political persuasions have the capacity to see the difference between a personal attack and a legitimate comment.

Time for iwog to leave as his unhealthy obsession with Trump has progressively gotten worse. Maybe he can seek professional help.

And no I don’t think his investment “wisdom” is going to be missed. Opportunity cost for buying & holding silver and gold all those years. Big, I’m going all cash, 1929 level market crash that never happened. Just flip a coin if you need iwogs investment advice.
