Dancing with the Dead may be spreading plague in Madagascar

Madagascar’s plague outbreak has killed more than 100 people and sparked fears among officials both on the island and abroad that the deadly disease could spread.

Now officials have identified a centuries-old tradition in Madagascar that could heighten the risk of the outbreak spreading: dancing with the dead.

The local name for the practice is famadihana, but it is also known as “the turning of the bones” or “body turning.” It involves families exhuming the bones of their deceased relatives, rewrapping them with fresh cloth, and dancing with the wrapped corpses before returning the remains to their graves.

Diversity can be a great thing. America is a melting pot, we all remember the stories of Ellis Island from K-12 history courses. But it only works if that culture integrates into the American culture as a whole, not the other way around.

The truth is, certain cultures are simply better than other cultures. Western culture went through the enlightenment, and the industrial revolution. More wealth has been created by Western Culture in the 20th and 21st century than the 19 centuries before it. On the other hand, Islam has probably held back the middle east at least 100 years in terms of economic and social growth.

Honor killings, acid attacks, or even "dancing with the dead" are very unique and "diverse" things but they won't create Unity which is what America is really about. Unified around an AMERICAN culture. That's what gave America strength.

I hope both sides (left and right) can consider the above when addressing each other in civil debate and discourse.

Conversely, homogeneous societies do not avoid conflict. They have plenty of interpersonal strife and competing agendas. Sometimes when things get real bad, civil war results.

Japan?

South Korea?

Any of the Nordic countries?

All seem really stable.

(I'm not advocating for homogeneous culture here in the U.S, but shared culture is an amazing stabilizing factor in modern society)

"It only works if the culture integrates into the American culture - not the other way around."

Not fully. Think of all the various foods and music which our ancestors brought over from the old country. I would hate to live in a place without that.

Interesting anecdote, I recently read a book or a American family in the 1950s was going to try a weird "ethnic" food called "spaghetti".

What exactly is American culture? Where did it come from? If we truly are a melting pot then doesn't our culture come from all those individual ingredients?

How much economic growth do you believe was going to happen in the middle of a very barren desert other than pumping out oil no matter what islam did? Western culture only seems to work in temperate climates with an abundance of natural resources some how. Especially after discovering a virtually empty continent overflowing with natural resources that were seriously depleted in Europe. Why is it that the same western culture was never successful in South America or Africa both which were colonized by the same people as North America? Did Islam hold back economic development in South America?

If you have the right knowledge, you can turn a desert into a thriving oasis. Islamic cultures tend to restrict their knowledge to the Koran, which is why their barren deserts will reman barren.

Those who preach diversity live in all white neighborhoods.

Diversity is just another name for affirmative action.

This is the price for solving the low birth rates problem in the West.
