In October 2013, developer Crescent Heights announced that New York celebrity chef Suvir Saran would open an 8,500-square-foot restaurant on the ground floor of NEMA, a 700-unit apartment complex at 10th and Market streets.

“I can’t begin to express my excitement about launching a restaurant in San Francisco and in the NEMA building particularly,” Saran said at the time.

But the restaurant never opened. About 18 months after the announcement, Saran pulled out, citing “unanticipated complications and endless delays.”

And more than four years later, all of the 13,500 square feet of retail space at NEMA sits vacant — a blank glass wall fronts Market Street instead of the lively shops and restaurants the developer had promised.

Anyone who has been to 10th and Market can tell you why: fragrant masses of homeless, shit and needles on the street, generally unsafe place to be walking around.

Ground level retail space in SF: otherwise known as homeless housing and toilets.

Possibly so, but would you suggest that the space would be better used as housing, or that the asking rents are too high?

SF awash in empty retail space

Isn't every place awash in empty retail space?

It has simply become too expensive to do anything here: eat out, see a show, etc. The real estate bubble has eaten us alive.

We're building to a crescendo. The bust is almost here. By some accounts, it already is.

Maybe a revised Bullitt (1968 Steve McQueen) movie using a Telsa that the battery goes dead just when needed would help. Maybe Jerry Brown could be driving it. Then he jumps on the 'bullit' train to nowhere for grand finale. Who says Hollywood is dead?
