A Chicago bakery that makes buns for McDonald’s lost 800 workers — about one-third of its workforce — after an immigration raid and was struggling to replace them.

Aryzta AG CEO Kevin Toland said the company was trying to replace 35 percent of its workers after a raid at Cloverhill Bakery in Chicago, according to Bloomberg News. The Swiss-based company bakes hamburger buns for McDonald’s Corp. and other fast-food chains and supermarkets.

The company now struggles to find enough workers and will have to increase its wages — what Toland called “like having a brand new factory and brand new workforce.”

The workers were hired by a staffing agency, according to company officials, and Aryzta officials were unaware of “the extent of the risk that existed to the business.” They could not verify the workers’ documents during the raid, which occurred in September.

I would assume half the people in inner city Chicago are unemployed. Good luck getting them to do anything that requires getting up before noon.

While the factory itself is in a average neighborhood. You've got Oak Park, one of the wealthier bordering suburbs to Chicago within a stones throw. So this isn't really inner city. We do wake up here in Chicago earlier than you ;)

I'm a homer admittedly, but Chicago has more going for it compared to a lot of non-coastal cities. Give it 3-5 years. Bookmark, tag, quote or whatever you need with this comment. Winter sucks here, but if you've been to Chicago in the summer, it's tough to beat as a major metropolis about 4-5 months of the year.

Looks like it’s time for Illinois to end welfare if they have to hire illegals because they can’t otherwise find workers. They should also request the federal government review every single SS disability case in the state.

Awww, you mean they might have to pay the market price when they don't break the law?

American Companies
"FU, pay me, it's the market price. Shopped around, eh? Didn't find any big price differences, huh? FU Pay Me. What, pay market price for wages? FU I'm breaking the law!"

Also, time to issue a warrant and get all internal memos and emails related to employment. But that might be a Chicago/Ill Noise thing so if it's up to those crooks, forget it.

So you are saying places like Alabama and Kansas don't have welfare or illegals working there? You would advocate this for all the red states too?

At least there is one workplace where you can grab buns without being fired, sued and publicly humiliated.

Of course! Lazy honkys need to quit making meth and start making buns! What kind of racist asshole would think they deserve different treatment than Basketball-Americans from Chicago?

When does the Dotard and his family start making crappy overpriced stuff in America instead of China ?

What's the democrat plan to raise tariffs to reciprocal rates (and anti-dumping when necessary) on China and to end NAFTA?

Let me know what Kamala Harris is planning., I mean if the Mexicans can ship cars to the US tax free, when are the Democrats going to allow the tariff-free import of Canadian Drugs? Can't wait to hear Corey Booker's plan.

What is the big deal? These workers will bring valuable skills back to their own country. Isn't that a good thing?

Teehehehehe.

Yeah, isn't it great all these Mexicans will bring cutting edge bun-baking skills to Mexico? I thought that made Neoliberals happy. Tom Friedman should be thrilled at the transfer of know-how, this is right up his alley.

f

If trump towers could have been made overseas and shipped here it would have been. Trump did use Polish illegals working in dangerous conditions without safety equipment or protection of any kind to tear down the existing building to build trump towers then didn't pay many of them. Seems illegals that make trump money are different..

Trump didn't mind using a bunch of government money to make trump towers happen either. That's the problem with libertarians. When they say government spending is wasteful they mean government spending on other people is wasteful..

Bobby, why are you always wrong. Trump didn't use Polish workers, a contractor that he hired had employed them. The contractor didn't pay them, so Trump had to step up and cover their wages, since the contractor defaulted. Please get your facts straight. I would suggest you stop watching Rachel Maddow, she keeps giving you bad information

Get your facts straight (that would be a first). Trump knew all about it and was told by his own people to get rid of them and use legal labor. They were only paid because their lawyer Szabo put a mechanics lien on trump towers. Trump threatened Szabo that he would call INS and have them deported but backed off. . Macari paid them, not trump and he paid in cash.. Trump later settled (remember trump claims he never settles) the case in court for 1.375 million.. That's all in the court records.

But trumpets know in their hearts that court records are fake news and bad information. Everything other than the world according to trump is fake news.

I knew all about it from the reporting at the time the trump towers were being built but was reminded of it by an article in the economist recently. I have no idea who Maddow is, sorry..

But you buy your daughter lunch at McDonalds and take it to her at school...okay then, good to know you are on board with your daughter eating it.

My daughter was 14 then, and Americans made the bread, and Liberals didn't openly hate America, that didn't happen until Hillary lost her Turn.
