Researchers have found an imbalance in the brain chemistry of young people addicted to smartphones and the internet, according to a study presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

According to a recent Pew Research Center study, 46 percent of Americans say they could not live without their smartphones. While this sentiment is clearly hyperbole, more and more people are becoming increasingly dependent on smartphones and other portable electronic devices for news, information, games, and even the occasional phone call.

Along with a growing concern that young people, in particular, may be spending too much time staring into their phones instead of interacting with others, come questions as to the immediate effects on the brain and the possible long-term consequences of such habits.

The study involved 19 young people (mean age 15.5, 9 males) diagnosed with internet or smartphone addiction and 19 gender- and age-matched healthy controls. Twelve of the addicted youth received nine weeks of cognitive behavioral therapy, modified from a cognitive therapy program for gaming addiction, as part of the study.

Dr. Seo reported that the addicted teenagers had significantly higher scores in depression, anxiety, insomnia severity and impulsivity.

Who knows what this is doing to people's memory and recall capacities.

Since Google inversed their search engine and it is primarily used for Corporations and Governments to query about the user.
It's not as powerful of a search tool for the end user that it once was no where close. I have searched for several things in the last year and there is no mention of it anywhere on the Internet. I know there has been hundreds if not thousands examples of images or website reviews, blogs and forum posts on these subjects. Before then the only thing I ever Googled and came up empty was for the Artist of a 3 foot carved Rosewood Eagle bust that was left at my house when I bought it.

There was a point when the "Google Effect" was a grave concern. Rather than even trying to recall from memory. Most people trusted Googles answer for the majority of any question posed to them. Over their own recollection explained and defined in their own words. Google had effectively became a portion of people's brains. People's knowledge retention was replaced by Google.

Now that it's a reality that Google is no longer that same Google. I find I recall things much easier or seek hard copy for information that I really don't know.

Another thing besides Google is much of the Information digitization that was done in the late 90's early 2000's on servers that hosted forums, personal websites, reviews, Ebay images, enthusiasts posting manuals and instructions, those companies closed down and their hard drives shit caned.

People threw out Libraries of hard copy books and tech notes assuming there would be a repository for it for ever.

Lots of Old Circuit schematics and tech notes are now lost to the ages.

I haven't had a cellphone for about a year, and I feel a lot more focused and balanced. And yes, it does give me one less distraction to keep me up at night.
