Dolphins — they're just like us! It turns out they too like to have fun by mildly poisoning themselves.
Some Australian dolphins carefully chew on pufferfish skin, and small doses of neurotoxin have a mild narcotic effect on them, according to The Independent.
"After chewing the puffer gently and passing it round, they began acting most peculiarly, hanging around with their noses at the surface as if fascinated by their own reflection," Rob Pilley, a zoologist on the BBC documentary miniseries "Dolphins: Spy in the Pod" said of the dolphins in an interview with the Sunday Times.

I wonder if recreational drug use has a correlation, or more prevalence, with higher intelligent species.

I find it a touch funny that SFGate would fail to mention homosexuality as other things we share with Dolphin society. Also, "babysitting".

It's also correlated with stupidity. Just go to any college and you'll see the dumbest people binge drinking. So lots of smart people and lots of dumb people binge drink. Chances are though, if you meet a heavy drinker, he's more likely to be dumb.

I didn't say heavy drinking is good for you or improves intelligence, only that there's a clear and strong correlation between intelligence and the probability of heavy drinking.

Maybe snorting puffer fish is how dolphins evolved that hole in their septum at the top of their heads that they breath through.

Associating drug, nicotine and alcohol use with intelligent, sophisticated and classy behavior has been a standard advertising trope of the pushers forever.

Really, why would somebody devote "research" time to point out that drinkers are more intelligent if they weren't having their balls massaged by the alcohol lobbies.

Go to your friendly local emergency room or police intake desk for a month and see how intelligent the users are. All you will see is dysfunction, disease, tragedy and death.

We have our Puritan roots and prohibition to thank for those morons. And I contest that the swill they drink counts as beer.
