Most of us can find areas to cut back in. How much do you spend on takeout? Uber? What about coffee?

If you want to build more wealth in 2018, start by identifying where you're wasting money.

Do any of the purchases below sound familiar? If so, try giving them up and redirecting the savings toward your savings goals or retirement account, where it could grow significantly over time.

ATM Fees
It'll cost you a record high of $4.57 to withdraw money from an out-of-network ATM.

Late Fees
Like ATM fees, late fees are a pointless money suck.

Underused Subscriptions
While you're doing some deep cleaning and purging at the start of the new year, also go through all of the subscriptions you're signed up for.

Buying Lunch Every Day
Dining out can add up quickly. The more food you can prepare at home, the better off your food budget will be.

Bottled Water
While you're getting into the habit of packing your lunch, start filling up a water bottle too.

Unused Gym Membership
If you're a gym rat, power to you, but if you can't remember the last time you stepped foot inside the facilities, it may be time to cancel your membership.

Cable
The average American spends more than $100 a month on cable.

Excess Groceries
Collectively, we waste a lot of food. Every time you throw away excess groceries, that's money down the drain.

Brand-name Products
Going generic — for certain groceries, toiletries or pet supplies — is an easy way to save money over time.

Impulse Buys
From grocery stores to department stores, retailers have a way of tricking you into spending money mindlessly.

Cherry picking the narrative again I see. Only a fucktard would take that out of context.

Good list Sniper! Bottled water is a tough one. Do you guys filter your water at home or drink tap water? Not sure I trust it.

I don't understand why people would pay over $100 for cable. Have people forgotten about over the air TV? If you live near a populated area, you likely can pick up about 30 channels, including ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS,Ion, and a host of sub channels like TV Land, Spike, a news channel, and a local weather channel. No cable needed to watch all the major networks and those channels with classic TV shows and movies. All for free in 1080i for just putting in an antenna. All flat panel TVs can tune in the ATSC over the air broadcasts..

I cut cable for years. Best decision ever.

Get a digital antenna and pay zero for TV, watch it rarely. Get a hotspot subscription for $30 for internet when out of public wifi range. Don't buy too much food, I estimate close to 25% of food bought is thrown away. Save the gym and go running outside and do strength work in the park. Stop buying shit you don't need. Go MAGA!

If you gave a bum a dollar he could find plenty of food that would feed him for the day.

So, then tell us why the average SNAP beneficiary can't survive on 4 times that amount the bum has?

I don't think you caught the context to the time I was talking about when someone could eat for $1.
This isn't about processed foods, it's about consolidated Agriculture resources, and the price of not being hungry gets more expensive by the day. From the farm to the market, just how precarious our food is. Markets decide one food item is hot, these farms jump on the bandwagon, they put small family farms out of business, what the EPA and Banks didn't already gut. They drive up the price of those items until they bust. They are parent company of the global supply because they own the farms everywhere. They then decide that food item isn't as profitable as the next greatest thing. The other food item gets even more scarce and expensive than ever because these large agrigroups aren't growing them.
We're one bad growing season away from world wide famine. I know that makes most peoples dick hard on Patnet, but that be a bad thing trust me.
The Arab Spring wasn't about politics, they were paying $30 for 10lbs of rice just like the rest of us were. Poor countries don't have that kind of money.

And shut the fuck up about what people waste and throw away, that's hog slop and compost is for you idiots.
Go farm then tell people what to eat and not eat. Oh that's right you can't or the EPA will come fine you for using water and fertilizer because the World bank decides where shit grows and who gets to grow it. And food apologists makes their day easy, tell another fat joke.

And we all know that thrifty family that curtails eating out and some other items from Sniper's Top Ten List, but then has a Lexus/Mercedes/BMW money pit sitting in the garage. And maybe a few iPhone 10s in the house.

Speaking of iPhones, Sniper, why did you leave upscale mobile phone devices and service off the list?
8   anonymous   2018 Jan 5, 4:46pm

Sounds like a list for really poor people.

Listen guys you are not going to be rich listening to fools like CiC.

Hey I just thought of a great way of saving money too. Eat cat food all year long!!!

Knock it off.

Actually everyone needs to relax on the personal attacks. We were doing good for so long too.

Ha ha

First, it wasn't my list, it came from an article at CNBC.

Buy second, don't you know having the latest iPhoneX with a $150/month data plan is an absolute necessity. No one will cut back on those expenses, they rather live in a refrigerator box first.

Even the homeless and other all-day/night street "dwellers" in SF have iPhones more expensive than my refurbished LG V20. Apple is a true cult.

Yup ever since Patrick banned Sniper from saying the word “you” and forced his posts to be moderated for personal attacks.

So every time you see Sniper post yo-u that should be sent to jail for incivility because Patrick banned him from it and he’s attempting to cheat the system.

Filter at home. The fridge provides filtered water. Change the filter every six months for about $35. Tastes good.
Only buy bottled water for 1)parties, 2)excursions

I actually grow a garden, that the EPA doesn't know about, and give the bulk of what grows to the local food bank.

Oh! Well you didn't tell me you had a garden! That's different, let's just get everyone an acre of land and we'll all grow vegetables and recite Jesus quatrains.
Tell another fat joke.
14   joshuatrio   2018 Jan 6, 8:19am

The only thing I splurge on in that list is a $160/mo gym membership. Because that shit is so expensive, I go every day of the week, and it keeps me in shape.

Other than that? All the other items I've done without for over 11 years.

Wrong, people need to buy smarter, stop buying processed foods, and learn to cook.

Processed food is a slow poison as far as I am concerned. It's much cheaper and healthier to cook from scratch. Sadly, the typical American lifestyle does not cater to the old fashioned way of cooking.

Gun crap
Spending money on a personal arsenal, which will be more likely to cause trouble than to do good.
17   anonymous   2018 Jan 6, 12:52pm

True because statistics show most of the time it’s the gun owners or their friends and relatives are the one who get shot. Accidental or not.

Good cooking is why you chose a wife carefully. Seriously, why would anyone marry a woman who cannot cook? Every other "benefit" is readily available while merely dating.

What statistics would that be?? from WaPo?

Get back to me when accidental gun shots of relatives or families EXCEED the number killed by automobiles. There's 30% MORE firearms in the country than cars, yet TOTAL accidental shooting deaths is 1/10 of what autos are.

yeah, true "statistics"....

That's nothing compared to growing fresh produce.

BorderPatrol, you can make your point again but this time, remove the personal attacks. Thanks.
22   Strategist   2018 Jan 6, 6:28pm

The list on the original post did not mention the Starbucks $5.00 daily Capuccino some people must have.
