The Rooney Rule is a National Football League policy that requires league teams to Interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation jobs.

I hate this type of discrimination.

Blacks are around 12.5% of the population according to that link. I'm going to round down to 10% because out of that 12.5%, probably 30% are deadbeats and couldn't even get a job, let alone coach at the HIGHEST level of an industry (this goes for all races, not just blacks).

So there's a MAYBE a 1 in 10 chance there's even a qualified black candidate to interview. And I don't care about the make up of the players as a percentage of the league. They are players and coaching is a totally different dynamic that very few people have the ability to do at the collegiate or NFL level.

It's honestly a slap in the face to blacks that are actually qualified for the job. It probably makes them feel like they weren't interviewed on their skills and that it was just quota filling to pass the Rooney rule.

Not sure why you can't just hire based on merit and skill and just put the fucking color blind goggles on (same goes for college admissions). Racism will stay around for as long as we continually acknowledge race on a daily basis as essentially being a "bad" word.

WookieMan, considering the NFL is 60-70% black (regarding players), I don't think your 1 in 10 chance is accurate. I'm not saying I agree with the Rooney rule or anything, but your logic of focusing on general population #s is wrong. After all, if you use that logic then there should be 16-17 female head coaches.

I to was gonna note that the best pool of applicants is former players, so the 10% isn't a good start point.

That aside, the rooney rule has an interesting effect in that there are some black dudes who are known to be seat fillers - mostly because the GM almost always has a very short list in mind which is likely based on who he knows. Still, even for the guys who are known seat fillers - it gives them access - it gives them exposure to GMs who otherwise aren't interested in expanding beyond their pool of knowns. However the best of these seat fillers get passed around over and over and over again, until eventually they too are now "known" by the GMs and owners within their circles, and yes some of them do get hired.

Long term I agree that the NFL should do away with this, but the issue (as the NFL saw it - and I as I now understand it) was that 70% of our players are black, why aren't there anywhere close to this level of coaches? Believe me, at this level and with this much $$$ on the line, GMs will only hire guys based on merit - but the rule allows more black dudes exposure to see if they do have merit or not.

Hey, blacks aren't smart enough to get these jobs on their own. They need The Man to give them a leg up.
