BROOKLYN, N.Y – Two indictments were unsealed Monday charging eight men and one woman from Long Island with conspiring to commit wire fraud, stealing identities and concealing and harboring illegal aliens employed at 7-11 Inc. franchise stores located throughout Long Island and Virginia. The charges, arrests and seizures resulted from an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General, the New York State Police and the Suffolk County Police.
The defendants are Farrukh Baig, 57, and Bushra Baig, 49, a married couple who owned, co-owned or controlled 12 of the 7-11 franchise stores located on Long Island and in Virginia; Zahid Baig, 52, and Shannawaz Baig, 62, Farrukh Baig’s brothers who helped to manage and control the stores; and Malik Yousaf, 51, Tariq Rana, 34, and Ramon Nanas, 49. Brothers Ahzar Zia, 49, and Ummar Uppal, 48, indicted separately, owned and controlled two other Suffolk County 7-11 franchise stores.

Through this scheme, the defendants allegedly hired dozens of illegal aliens, equipped them with more than 20 identities stolen from U.S. citizens, housed them at residences owned by the defendants and stole substantial portions of their wages. If convicted, the defendants face 20 years in prison on wire fraud conspiracy and alien harboring charges, as well as multiple counts of aggravated identity theft, which carries a mandatory, consecutive two-year term of incarceration. In addition, all property used to facilitate the harboring of illegal aliens, together with all proceeds of the wire fraud conspiracy and alien harboring charges, are subject to forfeiture.

A couple of 7-11 owners? Seriously? The smallest of small fry that didn't contribute to the republican party. . How about smithfield and tyson:?? or trump properties? When will we be seeing those raids?

True, the main reason that we do not enforce immigration law is that business owners don't want that. They like driving down wages for American citizens, and they like employing timid illegals who will be obedient workers for much less money because they can be turned over to ICE at any time.

I would not be at all surprised if the US Chamber of Commerce is behind most of the "poor Mexicans come here because they just want to help America" bullshit on NPR. The Chamber of Commerce probably funds NPR out of a cynical sense of self interest. Sympathy for illegals means more profits for CoC members.

The owners of business who employ illegal aliens should face mandatory hard time in prison. Not fines, just prison. The are rich enough off of illegal labor to just pay fines and laugh about it. Prison would be a different story.

The 13th Amendment has in fact been rendered irrelevant by allowing mass illegal immigration of obedient workers who can be shipped back as soon as they get uppity.

Who needs slavery when we have something much much better for business owners?

"Journey of a thousand miles, begins with one step."

Do you know how many franchisees, bodegas, hotel/motels, etc. are gaming the immigration system?

Do we ask this question of ANY other violation?

"Oh gee, I guess you're not merely selling liquor without a license. You're just an undocumented liquor store operator."
"Oh gee, I guess you're not peddling Oxycontin. You're just an undocumented Pharmacist filling undocumented Prescriptions."
"Oh gee, you can't go to prison for tax evasion. You were just an undocumented taxable entity!"
"Besides, you guys have kids!"

Shipping is an onerous cost.

Owners should be able to shoot the excess bodies the moment they become unprofitable and write off the cost of the bullets, exactly as the Founding Fathers intended.

The CoC is no doubt working on sneaking that provision into some bill about finding homes for stray kittens.

They did not go after these under Democratic admins either. Same reason of political payoff.

If they were serious, they would fine the employers with a compensation for the whistleblowers. What I cannot understand is why the Labor Unions are pro illegal immigration. It seems Labor would want employers to pay a high price for hiring illegals.

Do we get to deport them after they serve their prison sentence?

Do you know how many big corporations are gaming the immigration system? ICE is only going after the small fry for photo ops and political talking points. They will NEVER be going after the players that matter.

True, they never go after the big employers of illegal aliens, like the meat packing industry in Colorado. They are too politically important.

or the hotel industry, like say the trump chain.

I just had lunch with a lawyer who formerly worked for ICE, and he said some interesting things:

* Obama did not let ICE do its job. For example, if they showed up to arrest a specific illegal alien, and there were 15 other illegals working in the same place, they were not allowed to arrest the other 15.
* Employers do in fact use political influence to keep the laws from being enforced, so that they can benefit from employing illegals, at the expense of US citizens.
* It is claimed that "Americans don't want those jobs" but that's not true. It's only that Americans don't want to do those jobs for the same low pay that illegals will accept. He gave the example of someone offering to pay him a million dollars a year to work at a Tyson Chicken processing plant. He would absolutely take that job.
* ICE is happy that they are able to do their jobs under the Trump administration. He said that when Trump got elected, the joke was that there would be a spike in WD-40 sales as ICE employees oiled up their rusty handcuffs, which they had not been able to use for years.
* His summary was that we should either enforce our laws, or change our laws, but that it is a bad situation to have laws that are simply not enforced in order to benefit powerful political interests.

Labor Unions get professionalized. Instead of a smart shop worker, the leadership consists of lawyers hired by the Labor Union that works it's way up in the Office. Often the educated children of the smart workers from a past generation.

Hence, their worldview is less about "facts on the ground" and more ideological.

Same in Academia. Presidents and Deans used to be long-time Professors rewarded for their work. Today they are Admin Professionals who have spent 90% of their existence not doing anything academic.

Like rung-climbing officers, they make sure to dip themselves by teaching a course or two (Command position), but primarily they are and always have been professional Admins and not Academics.
