I'm SO HAPPY with this President.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Monday approved tariffs on imported solar-energy components and large washing machines in a bid to help U.S. manufacturers.

The Republican’s decision followed recommendations for tariffs by the U.S. International Trade Commission.

“The president’s action makes clear again that the Trump administration will always defend American workers, farmers, ranchers, and businesses in this regard,” U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a statement announcing the decision.

Most imported solar modules will face an immediate tariff of 30 percent, with the rate declining before phasing out after four years. For large residential washing machines, tariffs will start at up to 50 percent and phase out after three years.

China accused Trump of jeopardizing the multilateral trading system by taking action on complaints under U.S. law instead of through the World Trade Organization.

“The U.S. side once again abused its trade remedy measures,” said a Commerce Ministry statement. “China expresses its strong dissatisfaction with this.”

Mexico said Trump’s decision not to exclude it from the measures was “regrettable.”

“Mexico will use all available legal resources in response to the U.S. decision to apply protections on Mexican washing machines and solar panels,” its Economy Department said in a statement.

Whirlpool Says It's Adding Jobs After Trump Tariff Decision

Whirlpool Corp. said it’s adding 200 jobs after the Trump Administration imposed a tariff of up to 50 percent on large residential washing machines, a penalty aimed at imports from rivals Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc.

The new full-time employees will work at a factory in Clyde, Ohio, Whirlpool said on Monday. The American appliance maker also vowed to make broader investments in manufacturing and innovation.

Why do they phase out after 3 yrs? Weird. Who the fuck will buy a washer if it costs, say, 40% more this year, and they know it will go back down in a couple of years?
Does he think that manufacturers are going to move equipment to the US for a 3 yr protection scam? Will they? Is he trying to just piss people off to soften them up prior to some other trade negotiations?

CoC Suckers are Livid:

Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said Republicans need to understand that tariffs are a tax on consumers. “Moms and dads shopping on a budget for a new washing machine will pay for this — not big companies,” Sasse said in a statement.

Not really. There are Whirlpool and other products to choose from. Dumping means they are selling at or below cost to dominate the domestic market from abroad.

Furthermore, if you read Lightsaber's Press Release, you'll see the Tariffs don't disappear after 3 years, there is just a small reduction in the dumping penalty over 3 years.

Newberry County facility will create 954 local jobs and support advanced R&D and production of premium home appliance products
Ridgefield Park, NJ – June 28, 2017 -Samsung reached an agreement with the State of South Carolina to open a state-of-the-art home appliance manufacturing plant in Newberry County. The $380M facility will produce some of Samsung’s most popular, industry-leading home appliances and will generate 954 local jobs by 2020. This is the latest in a series of investments expanding Samsung’s U.S. holdings and operations.

B-b-b-b-but, it's only 1000 new jobs, I hear the Free Traitors groan. 1000 here, 1000 there, pretty soon it's tens of thousands then hundreds of thousands.

Under Clinton, Bush, and Obama there was a giant sucking sound. Now the Jobs vacuum has been reversed to blow. We won't rebuild Rome in a day, because it wasn't destroyed in a day.

People who need to wash their clothes today, maybe? How many will wait three years to buy a washer? Will they go down to the river and pound their clothes on a rock to wash them to save a few bucks?

Is it a high efficiency machine? If not, you've probably paid for a replacement 2 times over in extra electricity costs (assuming your dryer is electric).

Funny, I never heard any Democrat, except perhaps the lone voice of Sherrod Brown, ever complain about this. You'd think they would be bashing the Republicans on it 24-7.

But in the final analysis, the Republican President DID SOMETHING. We all know Obama didn't do shit, though he had the power, and Hillary certainly would have continued to be a strong CoC Sucker.

Huh? My dryer is gas but i was clearly talking about my washer! Don’t think it’s high efficiency, but how much juice could it really draw? I run a pool pump and a 2k sqf house with three kids who are always leaving the lights on. My electric bill still is usually less than $140. I got this thing for free from my last landlord who thought it was too old! “Take it with you”, he said. So I did! Six years later, I’ve replaced a dryer but not the washer! ‘Murica!

Replace the washer. It probably sucks up to much electricity and water. New washers are more efficient and clean better.
SCE must have a rebate going on for new washers.

Hook up a "kill-a-watt" meter to it first and find out the exact number. Then decide.
23   FNWGMOBDVZXDNW   2018 Jan 23, 6:46pm

High efficiency washers have a high spin rate and dry the clothes pretty well before they get to the dryer. That lowers the energy use and dry times of the dryer. That's why I referenced the dryer fuel.
Newer machines are less likely to last as long as older simpler ones, because they are more complicated. It's harder to make something more efficient. But total cost of ownership might be lower.

Clothes seem to spin pretty decently wrung out. Idk. Everyone I’ve known who has bought a new fancy front loader has regretted it. My top loader washer is still going strong!

I agree, I have a front loader. Horrible design. It's virtually impossible to get a complete load transferred to the dryer without dropping articles on the ground. Plus, more items seem to get twisted together than what use to happen with the top loader. and, no matter how little detergent used, there is always foam/soap bubbles right at the door that clothes get dragged through going to the dryer. Never rinses completely. This unit is a total piece of crap.
26   anonymous   2018 Jan 23, 8:07pm

In my experience, front loaders work pretty well, if they are filled with enough of water. It seems like all the new models are "water efficient," which seems to be code for "wash twice", or in the case of California's toilets, "flush twice."

30   FNWGMOBDVZXDNW   2018 Jan 24, 6:01am

I just had to think about this, because we bought a set after our 17 yr old dryer conked out. We bought both, because our old set was smaller, we wanted a bigger set, and we wanted the washer/dryer load sizes to be balanced.

First, there are big savings to be had during the normal sales (e.g. thanksgiving). I don't know why, but appliances are always 30-40% off at that time, so it might not pay to wait until your machine breaks and just go replace.

HE machines directly save water, detergent, electricity. Indirectly, they save fuel in the hot water heater and dryer (by using less water, and by getting clothes dryer). So, slapping a watt meter on it will not be a good economic calculator. Some P&G detergent is made for cold water, and if one actually uses cold water with the detergent, this changes the economics of the whole thing. We recently bought a new front loader, because a small kid is more capable of helping do the laundry and it makes a nice big work surface on top. You do have to bend over or squat more to move laundry over, and you need a basket to keep clothes off the ground. HE machines take longer, but the new machines do huge loads. Front loaders have to be leveled well and not overloaded. They have complicated load balance mechanisms. You can see this as the machine seems to work to balance the load in the beginning. However, spinning a huge load of laundry at 1300rpm with a spindle on one side is an engineering challenge and a weak point in the design. That's why leveling and loading correctly is important.
There's a financial calculator here: http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/laundry.html We didn't bother with a financial analysis, because we've been happy with an HE front loader over the last 17 yrs. IIRC, when I purchased my first HE washer, the analysis showed that it would pay for itself in savings over a normal top loader without a particularly long life span.

Front loader washers are the dirty ass-fuck business move of the century. I can't believe I bought into this bullshit, if you need a tub of water you do it fucking vertically, with a fucking drain at the bottom. fuck these fucking turds- my clothes aren't really clean or dry and my wife constantly bitches.

do they sell a machine I don't hear bitching about? Thats the one I want. I don't care if theres a 6" diameter x 24" long dildo that hits me in the face as I walk in from the garage, what I need is for this fucking noise to end.

The real solution is a washer/dryer combo, methinks. But everything is a piece of shit RV device; I want a 220V washer and a gas dryer that I push the button once and that shit is done. I even have space for two!

If you're so unconcerned about the topic of this conversation, which is the balance of operating costs and capital costs of appliances in general and washer/dryers in particular, then perhaps you should not participate in it.
This is a situation where some people are given the option to save money, be better for the environment, and have newer things, and they still say no. Sometimes, built to last forever is not always better.

Right. But the jump from 10y.o. HE washer to the latest stuff won't be anywhere close as dramatic. Therefore the argument that it's not really worth it to "upgrade" unless your existing machine is dead or dying.

I agree with that. I didn't upgrade for efficiency gains. I upgraded to get 35% savings on a new one (I couldn't do that if I waited until the current machine died) and to have a washer capacity that matched my new dryer capacity (nearly twice as large as the old one). My wife does the laundry, but I'd just assume she spend less time on it, and the extra capacity helps with that. The efficiency discussion was as it relates to Quigley's 20 yr old non HE machine. In that case, moving to an HE machine is not likely to actually cost Quigley money over the long term.

On a related subject, I often see people keeping old refrigerators running, because they are 'free'. That's just stupid.

And why should the final destination of profits concern a working class person who may be employed in such a factory? Will he somehow benefit by having an American wealthy elite reap those profits over a foreign wealthy elite? If recent history is shown, the foreigner is more likely to reinvest those profits in his community.

All he cares about is if he will have a job.

Jobs are the ticket here, not profits.
