On any given day, as many as 20 people take to the City Hall lawn, across the street from LAPD headquarters. They're there to "escape the madness" in downtown streets, a 53-year-old homeless man named Lazarus said last week. At night, they fan out to doorways or deserted plazas to wait for daybreak

More immigration will solve this problem.
2   Strategist   2018 Feb 1, 11:18am

Interesting article. It's basically saying nothing works to solve the homeless problem.

"Homeless people on skid row were expected to enter shelters, graduate to transitional housing and finally earn permanent housing through good behavior, including sobriety. But many people fell off that path and never returned.
The containment policy is now considered a failure."

They are only homeless because they want to be homeless.
3   FuckTheMainstreamMedia   2018 Feb 1, 11:42am

The article is wrong

Subscribing to the broken windows theory, LAPD moved the skid row homeless population from around 15,000 in the early 2000’s to under 2,500 by 2010. Note that the recession didn’t cause numbers to increase.

Now under Eric Cuckcetti, who in his younger years stated he believed the govt should provide housing to everyone, the LAPD arrests no homeless and not only has skid row exploded in population, but now there are large homeless populated tent towns known as Garcettivilles all over the City of Los Angeles.

It’s a complete disaster and happened entirely under the watch of a very leftist mayor and city council.
4   FuckTheMainstreamMedia   2018 Feb 1, 11:48am

I should clarify...the article does say what I say, but it’s wrong because it fails to properly place the blame in context. Garcetti and the City Council members are mostly elitist socialists. They don’t truly believe the masses should own property or possessions. This is proven through LAPD’s treatment of property crimes as a non existent priority combined with their universal support of prop 47.

So they in no way shape or form thought this would happen with the homeless explosion and combined with awful court rulings, the problem was left to fester.

But, but, but, CA is the wealthiest state in the nation and adds the most to GDP, how can these people be homeless, when housing prices are going to the moon?

Something is missing??

Some people lack self respect and a sense of shame, so they’ll take the easiest path. Doing drugs, living in a tent (camping!), and hanging out with your friends while the government gives you money to accost motorists with pleas and threats for their “spare change” is a pretty good life if you’re that type.

I don’t give money and haven’t in years, ever since I figured out I was just putting the cherry on top of their sweet little scam.

I have had 2 elderly women in the last few years ask me to buy them food at a McDonalds and a Taco Bell. They clearly said they did not want money, just food. I got them whatever they wanted.
If able bodied bums ask me for money, which happens almost every week, I give them nothing. They deserve to be beaten.
12   BayArea   2018 Feb 1, 8:10pm

We have a society where labor is exchanged for money. That money is used to pay for shelter, food, other necessities (if there is money leftover then investment, luxuries, etc).

The fundamental problem is that the majority of homeless aren't interested in subscribing to the model above. And so city efforts are futile and we just keep kicking the can down the road. As long as homeless are not motivated to work, then the problem is not solvable. The homeless will regress back to their path of least resistance, which is being on the streets.

There are exceptions to every rule, but I speak in general/majority terms on this issue.

The homeless like being homeless. They do not want to work. This is why we need to make the life of the homeless miserable.
If you make life good and easy for them, they have no incentive to change. Kind hearted people who help the homeless only contribute to the homeless problem. It's like giving more heroin to the addict than less.

Wait, all the Democrat politicians say we just need to raise the minimum wage to $15/hr and everything will be fine. We're they lying to us?

16   Strategist   2018 Feb 1, 8:44pm

I honestly think it's the bleeding heart liberals who cause the homeless problem by making it more comfortable and easier to be homeless.
I also believe it's the bleeding liberals who contribute to terrorism by being so sympathetic to baby killers like Hamas, and feeding these scumbags while blaming America for everything.
Bleeding heart liberals are nice guys and really concerned about fellow humans, but they are much too short sighted.

Nah. They really believe that nonsense. They have tried everything to solve the homeless problem, only to make it worse.
I think it's the liberals who need the real kick in the pants, more than the homeless.

We didn't have homeless people in Leon Valley which is basically a suburb of San Antonio where I lived for about 15 years. In the 80s and 90s the cops would pick up transients and drive them to the edge of town then tell them to start walking.

When I visit I do see some several miles out near 1604 and culebra road. Nothing like CA though. I live in North County San Diego and every morning there are a bunch of them doing a reverse commute through the neighborhood I live in. I think they're going to the library and shopping center.

I have no problem with the cops kicking them out. They do have options they just don't want to use them - exactly as you say Strat.

My best friend since 1st grade still lives in the SF bay area. He and his brother became schizophrenic in their teens. Both were homeless for a while by choice. The state has him set up in a nice apartment (nicer than mine when I was living there making >100K), cash, schooling/training, healthcare - the works! He's still crazy as fuck but I'm proud of him. Wins all sorts of awards for do-gooding.

Loves the democrats because they give him lots of awards. Based on his description it's clear to me much of it if not all is just to get there votes. So I don't speak of politics when I'm visiting. Mentally he's still 16.

It's taken about 20 years but it seem that now his brother has decided to get off the street onto the Cali gravy train. No teef left though. Someone kicked those out about 5 years ago.

I've got no problem at all with the state taking care of people like that who truly need it so long as their from here. If they were bused in from Chicago they need to go the hell back. No problem with kicking the 'homeless' out of my county either. Go get help our get out.

I'll respond to this part with a loud and boisterous NOOOOOOOOO! They need to stay in your state. They ain't paying taxes here, or weren't pay taxes here is more proper.

Everything else you said was adequate at best. Who am I kidding, it was pretty good. But you definitely had some bad luck though on the 1st grade friendship setup. Luck of the draw I suppose.

I can't speak for LA but here in SD it seems way worse that the bay area but I've been gone 5 years. I lived mid-peninsula too so perhaps that has something to do with my impression.

I don't doubt that. Was in San Diego 2 years ago, exactly this week. The day we were heading out to end the trip we didn't have anything planned and just figured we'd wander around Balboa Park. The El Prado little strip thing by the zoo.

I live/work/play in Chicago, so homelessness to me is a nothing burger for the most part. It was bad and I even think that was an area they try to keep "clean" of that because it's by the zoo (I don't know this for sure, just a guess). Needless to say, we were flying out in the early afternoon and had some leftovers and some other shit we weren't or couldn't easily fly with.

And I know, I was feeding the monster, but we gave away all the food we had to the foraging park bums. I don't drink the hard liquor, but my wife got a handle of Tito's (or at least I think it was) once we got to CA and she had about 1/3 to maybe even 1/2 the bottle left. For fucks sake, she gave it to a bum.

As I typed this, what's the lingo out there for these types? Most people I know in Chicago call homeless people bums. Wasn't sure what you guys out in CA call them. Might be the same as here, but then you remember you've met someone from Boston and realize how fucked up people really are.

I know. Giving you a hard time. Seems like the people I know that moved to San Diego area or have always lived there always make sure to mention it. Every region or locale has it's quirks. Da Bears! You guys always mentioning San Diego unprompted is something I've noticed. Not a bad thing, just a thing.

Saw naked person yesterday walking our neighborhood. Another one was probably shooting up, not an expert, hard to tell. Some of those people are fucking insane.
This government policy isn't working, whatever the hell it is.
35   RecentCost   2018 Apr 13, 12:50pm

I love when "homeless experts" cite an increase in the cost of living and higher housing costs as a main cause of the explosion of the homeless population in California. So most of the vagrants would be gainfully employed productive members of society if a gallon of milk was 50 cents cheaper and Los Angeles property prices came down 5-10%? But instead they are begging on the streets and getting high? This lets me know that the "experts" are actually just idiots. We are doomed.
