Anyone having trouble viewing the site?

It's under attack again.

Let me know if you get any kind of error message, or if it hangs: p@patrick.net

Of course you won't even see this if it's hanging for you...

No idea. DoS attack message?

I would click to go back to the main page and get "Rate Exceeded" in New Times Roman Font on an otherwise blank screen and had to click a few times to actually get it to show.

Due to checksum errors the "G" was dropped. Should read "Great exceeded"
Trump is ahead of schedule.

It's a message the site gives if the same IP address is trying to make overlapping requests. That is, if a browser (or robot like the Googlebot) has one request outstanding, and then starts another, I'm saying "hey, wait a minute, your first request didn't even finish yet."

I have to do this to protect the mysql database, which is the weakest part of the site. But if the database has already been slowed down, your own request may take so long that you do then something else and get that "rate limit exceeded" message.

I think the site slowed down because Baidu started indexing it for some reason. On every hit, I look up the country associated with the IP address so that I can block certain spammy countries, and that lookup was pretty inefficient. With the additional load from Baidu, everyone started suffering the result.

I made that country lookup much faster, and that seems to have fixed it. I hope so anyway. Kind of hard to tell with these timing issues.

Yes, I can do that. Not trying to insult BAO, just saying what happened so the other users know that his mangled posts are his own doing and not a bug or anything I did.

He's welcome back, as is Iwog. Everyone is welcome. I don't ban people. (Well, I did one time.)

My hope is still that patrick.net can be a place for civil discussion of issues without getting personal. It's quite a challenge, isn't it? Maybe people are just hard-wired to see others as "on my team" or not, and to hate every individual "not on my team" no matter what.

I can only speak for myself as I don’t play that left right team nonsense. It’s apparent that the way that the OG Troll CiC was handled over the years (free reign to attack all the free thinkers) followed up by the 180 where we abandoned Free Speech, and replaced it with biased moderation with a Strong Right slant, rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Most still don’t seem to understand wtf even happened, and you’re not willing to explain. So the response isn’t so suprising to me, actually I’m not sure what anyone else expected.

Free Speech is very valuable. I’m glad that those at the wrong end of the stick haven’t simply laid down silently. It gives me hope for the future.

I'm pretty certain that after what you did to him iwog is never coming back. What was it he used to say? Voting for Republicans has consequences? Well in your case treating people like this has consequences.

wtf?

Iwog and his crew have committed 90% of the disruption here in terms of insults. I should know I’m the one constantly seeing the posts in moderation.

Sniper takes the bulk for the other side of that fight but he’s one person and guess what, he’s actually been trying to follow the rules recently.

Iwog never fucking left that’s a fact. He’s been posting anonymously for months and many others have been as well. He even created a one-off account “Toddthebod” which he immediately used to trash the website.

All of those guys are welcome to post. But you guys have got to behave. It’s been what... 4 months now since these rules have been implemented? You guys are still crying like babies about it. The one fucking rule this place has you guys constantly fail over and over to follow.

So you bitch and moan that you’re being silenced somehow and about “free speech”. This isn’t a free speech issue, it’s a maturity issue.

How about the comment that contained no personal information on your thread about Obamacare? All it said was that medicare doesn't cover the same pool of people as does private insurance so it's not a good comparison.

That was personal?

Maybe Patrick can also confirm that what you allow to pass moderation can have an even larger effect on stifling a discussion than what you ban. Kind of amazing some of the stuff that gets by as long as it conforms to an alt-right bias.

If you leave out the personal attacks, I let pretty much every comment pass moderation. I'd say I approve 99% of comments that go into the queue.
