This may be complex, but , the court is not ruling over religious matters, it is ruling over a divorce decree. Mama ignored the decree, violated it and is being held in contempt of court.

I did what in the hell does the state have any say in which religious pageant one parent wants the kid to participate in or not?

I would consider it reasonable if kid was born to a Baptist and a Christian family they have completed both the first communion and baptismal.
I grew up Baptist, my wife Catholic, our daughters took part in the Catholic rituals. I couldn't imagine a court trying to determine otherwise. Even I was a tent revival bible thumping Baptist from the '20's.
