Lots of interesting photos.

I know these guys are just trying to make money by breaking our laws, but the real criminals are their US employers. Employers of illegals get away with undercutting American wages and labor laws, directly harming millions of American citizens. Please don't go on about how "no US citizen wants those jobs". The truth is that US citizens don't want to compete with illegal immigrants to see who will accept the lower wages. Citizens will pick strawberries if you pay them enough. Hell, I'll do it for a certain price.

We need hard jail time for employers of illegals. It would be far more effective than mere wall. I'd like to hear Trump propose that.

The little Mexican girls in the American flag T-shirt’s choked me up a bit. I think of my daughter and her innocence and no knowledge of politics at 4. How filled with hope of a better life she was promised by her parents... and the fear she is probably going through now. It’s just sad.

$20 an hour minimum, water breaks every hour, rest period every two hours, minimum half hour for lunch. No work if the temp is 95 or above and shaded rest area required.

It's fucking backbreaking work being bent over all day long, same for picking potatoes by hand. I've done both - it is not fun or easy even for an hour.

Are the consumers willing to pay the increased cost in the produce to support living wages and work conditions ?

Picking potatoes by hand is idiotic: it's done by the fucking machines.

Of course. And that feeling is abused by the employers who are exploiting them and betraying American citizens.

And so they fund npr as long as npr broadcasts at least two human interest stories about illegals every day and never talks about the harm that illegal employers do to equally deserving poor Americans.

The moment that npr shows sympathy for a poor American girl, their funding will be cut off.

Look at those trigger-happy helicopter jockeys HUNTING for illegal immigrants with helicopters and weapons pointed out the door. Disgusting. It looks like Iraq or Vietnam, both places that never should have happened. Is border patrol the new retirement scheme for the US Army?

All things considered is brought to you by Mr. and Mrs. Alfred J Merck Foundation, better living, through SSRIs. And by, California Pea Packers of Sacramento: Peas and Love, Man.

No - not "everywhere".

Both can be harvested by machine but this is not universal.

It should be universal. If even fucking USSR with all its slave labor did it with machines there is no fucking reason to keep doing it here manually almost 30 years later.

Except for justifying importing more Dem voters from the 3rd-world countries that is.

Soviet joke: Q. what is incapable of noisy potato picking? A. Machine for simultaneous making noise and picking potatoes made in USSR.

Sadly, nothing will be done. E-verify exists, and despite grand posturing, none of R presidents/administrations have done anything to mandate its use. Trump himself hires H visa holders for his hotels - while this is not illegal, I doubt that hotel workers need qualifications that are not available in US.

They are only dem voters after they get citizenship. Damn those dems sure are long term thinkers bringing in people who won't be able to vote for decades into the future if ever. Good thing republicans aren't bringing them in to exploit them as cheap labor to make bigger profits while displacing american workers. That couldn't possibly have anything to do with it.

If using illegals is cheaper than using a machine then illegals get used. I've seen foundations dug by hand in cameron county (which include mcallen) because it's cheaper than hiring a back hoe. My plumbing contractor hired 4 illegals to dig a new sewer line from my house to the street because it was cheaper.

If any US citizen can fill these jobs then it seems that it should be illegal. In any case it is just as bad as hiring illegals.

Not sure why my username appears in that quote. Bug, @patrick ?

Yes, it's kind of a bug. Looks like they selected that text and then hit "quote" on your comment, just above that comment, which will cause that effect.

I suppose I should make all "quote" links apply only to the text of its own comment, but it's a bit more complicated than what I do now.

Some machines (which would lay idle 11 - 10 months of the year) are better rented. If you can rent the machine for 6k ($600 hr for 10 hrs) or hire 50 guys for 10 hrs at $5.20 per hour ($5,200) why would you ever use the machine?

Thanks for reiterating the problem the open borders present.

And we both know that the final cost of these "guys" to the society is way over $5.20 per hour they spend bended over on these potato fields.

As well as the importers of fine produce everywhere to keep out prices low and people in slavery like conditions for as long as they may live.

As Chavez says, as long as California Agra demands cheap labor, they'll abuse Mexicans.

By the way, I talked to an old Oregonian the other day. He told me during WW2 was he was a kid, he used to pick peas in the Willamette Valley for 20 cents an hour, and the farmers used to bitch about how expensive it was. The minimum wage was about 25 cents back then.

Of course, to get $2 working from sun up to sun down was a huge deal back then, especially for somebody whose first memories was the depression.
