I just learned that after successfully lobbying the state legislature to create a new profession of arborist, landscapers in CA are now engaged in a campaign to have cities in CA require homeowners pay $300 and more for an “arborist opinion” before they can trim a tree.

They have actually been successful already in getting many cities in CA to require an “arborist” opinion” before “endangered” oak trees can be pruned or removed even though oak trees are not actually endangered in CA, can frequently pose a danger to human life, and often encroach on other peoples property. And even though there is no objective standard on which arborists base their opinions, creating literally endless opportunities for dueling opinions, as is the case for psychiatrists in criminal trials

All you have to do to become an arborist is to obtain a landscape contractors license and you will be legally able to opine for money as to whether or not someone can trim a tree.

Why work for a living in CA when there are so many other ways to make money

Credentialism at work. Of course, those arborists will hire illegals to do the hard work and pocket the difference, while California threatens any who cooperate with Federal Law with illegal fines.

I tried trimming some bushes, and got a MeToo letter from a lawyer.

Very good point. The real gardening/landscaping work in CA is done by non-English speakers while the English speakers get a landscape contractor/arborist license.

I do not see this as enforceable.

Unfortunately many cities in CA and particularly in the Bay Area disagree with you.

It’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission
