Thousands of people in Los Angeles, California, are living in battered Winnebagos and motor homes as residences to avoid living on the street.

These recreational vehicles serve as a cheaper options for those with lower incomes as the housing market continues to skyrocket year after year.

The 2017 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count recorded 4,545 campers and RVs in L.A. that could serve as makeshift homes, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The newspaper investigated these areas to discover the hidden homeless that are living inside these impoverished communities.

It's a decent solution, actually. Relatively cheap, safe, and self-contained, just needs services and a place to park. Perhaps the government should be actively encouraging Winnebagos for the homeless.

What is the cost of a used Winnebago or camper van vs the cost of public housing or housing shelters?

Old RVs are cheap to buy for the same reason old boats are cheap: they require shitloads of money thrown at them regularly in order to be livable/operational. Or they turn into shitboxes pronto.

Shitbox RV is still better than cardboard box.

I rent in an affluent neighborhood in LA (no rent raise in 9 years, so just banking and investing the cash--another story), and I enjoy the random '70s Winnebagos that turn up on our streets for a few weeks at a time. Beats the tent cities and bums straight up taking a shit in front of you.

People on my block are paying $1.5mill for 1400 sqft houses on 6000sqft lots and they have to put up with Ye Olde Orange and Brown Striped F-17 squatting on their curb . . . often with a generator loudly humming away for hours at a time and the reek of sour piss from the sewer line. Well worth $1k/sqft!
