https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/mar/01/disneyland-california-employees-poverty-homelessness-study

Earning $11.50 an hour, Taylor cannot afford anywhere to live in Orange County, where Disneyland is located, and is sleeping on friends’ couches. For a long time, Taylor thought she was the only person who struggled with homelessness and poverty on Disney wages, but a new study indicates otherwise.

Almost three-quarters of the 5,000 respondents to the survey, which was commissioned by 11 union organizations, said they do not earn enough money to cover basic expenses every month. And more than one in 10 reported having experienced homelessness in the past two years.

With an untapped reservoir of wealthy show biz molesters available for financial gain, they only have themselves to blame.

I've known people that continue to decline better paying work while working at Disneyland. There's consequences to making your childhood your adult life rather than making it a hobby.

Pay scale in OC is pretty decent(albeit expensive to rent or buy a home). Fast food workers make more than some Disneyland workers. The cast members at Disney should be college students still living at home, or a part time job.

This is what comes when you allow right wing to characterize any form of regulation as communism.

This is what happens when you allow the Left to collude with Big Finance to rig the Labor Market with Millions upon Millions of Unskilled Immigrants.

Now there is a glut of unskilled workers. Since the supply outstrips demand, you can pay unskilled workers jack shit, and not worry about them finding greener pastures at the next employer, because the market is absolutely overstuffed with desperate laborers.

To create a long-term fix, that "regulates itself", control the Labor Supply by enforcing immigration law.

These facts are basic and were known a hundred years ago. Labor Unions used to fight tooth and nail to prevent mass immigration in the past.

Meh, it’s the glut of kids who want to work at Disneyland that’s the problem. They are too young and too idealistic to understand economics and just want to be part of the “magic.” That’s why Disneyland never has a problem filling jobs at low wages. Plenty of idiots ready to fill them!

This is correct. All that regulation would do is see Disney raise the already obscene prices even more.

At least the Disney princesses wondering the park make a lot of money escorting to rich Japanese men after work in costume.

Absolutely. Disney is also guilty of abusing the H-1B program in Florida. Looks like they will get away with it.

Disney makes most of its money these days from movies and from its parks. Profit margin is not the issue. They actively raise prices to regulate the flow of traffic. Priced too low: traffic is too high/unmanageable. Priced too high: traffic is too low. They are constantly raising prices to find that “magic” point where people complain about the ticket price but still buy the ticket... the ones who can afford it that is. Don’t need no poor people in th magic kingdom!

Unless, of course, they are the serfs making lunch or sweeping up after the guests.

Most of the workers i've seen in Disneyland and other theme parks are kids working part time, summer jobs and what have you. If they want more money they can always work some place else. Unemployment in OC is 2.6%. It's not hard to find a job, it's hard for employers to find workers.

Yup. Kill all the capitalists like Lenin and Stalin did, and everyone will be filthy rich for ever.

Some people want much higher wages, low ticket prices, and lot's of benefits. You only get to pick one.

Have they considered looking for work elsewhere..? Because as we all know the economy is booming, and recession long gone.

Yes.

And a another great portion of how they develop the mentality is that their moron elders keep telling them "You can do anything you want." and "Find a job you love." repeatedly.

Well, lots of kids like Disney and McDonalds and Sociology, so they take the advice literally.

And 16-19 year olds have so little life experience, especially if they grew up in the burbs, to vet that moronic advice.

Previous generations would have said "That doesn't pay. Pick something else or you'll screw up your chances in life, kid."
15   mell   2018 Mar 11, 7:42pm

They clearly need more H1B visa workers and even more unskilled illegal DACA dreamer immigrants because those $11 wages are too costly for Disney! Disney stronk! fuck orange cheeto and his protectionism! rezist!

Some entry-level jobs are meant for teens and young adults who are supposed to be still living at home.

Raising wage requirement for those jobs to a level where the workers can pay for an independent household would mean that most youths wouldn't be able to find a job before mutually self-defeating degree requirement instead of easy first-jobs! That is actually a very dangerous development: instead being in entry-level jobs and learning first-hand how to satisfy customers, they'd be stuck in "colleges" learning Cultural Marxist nonsense inflating their egos while making them unemployable due to lack of real skills and huge educational debt . . . those would be like tinder piling up for a firestorm, leading to massive social upheval.

Raskolnikov the unemployable law student in "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoyevsky was a classic on the intellectual mileu of pre-revolutionary Russia. In real history, Robspirre, the leader of French Revolutionary Terror, was student representative welcoming Louise XVI to royal inspection tour of Paris University (the world's most prestigious university at the time, like Harvard today) a decade or so before sentencing the King to beheading while destroying the entire French society and economy!

We attended a conference there last year at this time and you can just see what the place is about. It's run like the Army. It felt like the Army.
We didn't re-up for that conference this year and it wasn't at Disneyland. IDUG was in Philadelphia for 2018 and I'm sure it was better.

I'm finding myself telling more and more young people that appear to have potential to consider the services.

Go to that state university and get your hand stamped if that's what you think you need but those people aren't likely to teach you anything substantive about life. If they could, they wouldn't be teaching in that university.

This is a common fallacy. Disney sets prices to maximize profit and that price level is INDEPENDENT of cost.

That's Econ 101 stuff.

We know that one of the reasons for this shit and indirectly the reason we had Obama was due to the government handing over control of the student loan program to the banks. Working man's universities such as the one my wife and I attended were suddenly under threat of disappearing. If you had gotten yourself admitted to Ohio State or Miami or even Denison, why the hell would you ever consider a place like Akron or Kent? You wouldn't...and they didn't. In droves, but that is all about to change back. Administration of the student loan program has now returned to the government and as Betsy and her people tighten the screws, higher priced educational country clubs such as Otterbein, Kenyon, Denison and Ohio Wesleyan will begin to feel the heat. Hiram just today announced a wholesale downsizing.

All I can tell you is that those of us who are graduates of the school of hard knocks (my wife and I to a far lesser extent) have been heard.

It's booming for now, until the credit runs out.

There's an article in last month's Fortune concerning debt, deficits and long discussions behind closed doors in Washington. Judgement day is coming.

At the end of the eighties, I do remember a series of articles about implementing a Goods and Services Tax or Value Added Tax which is how other western nations fund their social safety nets. Old folks here have long enjoyed European style benefits without European style taxation. Who pays? The kids do. Whose fault is that? Jack Kennedy's. He and his party going all the way back to FDR had wanted single payer health care in this country but each time were shot down. Single payer for the aged (that's what Medicare is) was a fallback position and that's what we have today.

Those among us who think about such things should begin to ponder what happens when so much money is taken out of the economy so quickly as would happen with imposition of a GST or VAT. I'm spending one week per quarter in Toronto for my work and you don't have to be there very long to understand what they do not have that we take for granted. Also, why they do not have it and why they have chosen not to have it.

Larry Arnn, president of Hillsdale College, said there are some things in the pipeline that will push this along. I'm thinking it will be a Starve The Beast scenario where the necessary changes will be so wrenching that all this crazy kid activist stuff, left wing slushes, etc won't be able to exist. We won't have the money for it. Was he talking about a GST where the government sucks money out of the economy at every step of goods production? Maybe. Clearly, he knew something the rest of us don't.

A very good friend of mine is an SF Bay Area radio and television inside guy who says working at KGO (ABC O & O for many years) is very buttoned down and corporate, just as are the Disney offices in Los Angeles. The saying is, if you don't come in Sunday don't come in on Monday. They love kids right out of school, to run the living shit out of them and toss out in a few years. They're known for that.

It's embarrassing having former child stars jingling cups outside the ticket booths.

There are some communists who think Disneyland entrance should be $10.00 and minimum wages should be $50.00.
They will find everything they desire in Cuba.
