How Elizabeth Holmes swindled the rich and famous who are supposed to be smarter than the rest of us

Because the rich are fashion sluts, milling about with each other and brown nosing each other with complacency and empty status symbols in a herd like hierarchal driven sensibility. They get used to being surrounded by sycophants and charming, flattering sociopaths. They are prey, sometimes easy, sometimes not.

Some also don't have the time or desire to attend to their wealth, and will rely on their lame Bertie Wooster peers for financial advice and suggestions.

Doctors are notoriously easy to swindle, because they are narcissistic, and believe they have immediate and absolute command of a few dangling salient facts presented to them about investments.

Smarts are not necessarily street smarts.

Holmes appeared to be the fearless girl that would beat the boys in the Silicon Valley and show the world women can be smart, leaders, inventors, scientists, and... well rich.
Who wouldn't want to believe? (outside the troglodytes on patnet?)

I may not be very bright but I can smell a fart in a car. When you're trying to pretend to be the next Bill Gates/Steve Jobs, too smart for college and wearing turtlenecks, and your Dad is a revolving door executive going between Bechtel, the EPA, and the Oil Industry and back again...

Ok, so, that's where she learned to bullshit. Too bad her general counsel didn't work with Madoff.

One sometimes wonders if successful narcissistic types genetically distill psychopathy/sociopathy in their children. I've known some rich kids that were real pieces of work.

The movie "Pacific Heights" has Michael Keaton playing a particularly chilling psycho. Keaton's character was a sociopath alienated from his wealthy family, who wanted nothing to do with him.

I first learned about Theranos from KQED. Michael Krasny did an interview with Elizabeth Holmes that was essentially an uncritical promotional piece. It was later repeated. I was very enthusiastic but when I then s/w my son, who is a biotech researcher, he pointed out many red flags and was amazed anyone took Holmes or Theranos seriously.

Wow, that was a great call. I never really believed the hype. Given my multiple degrees in Chemistry and Physics, I found it far fetched that a girl can drop out in the first year and have enough understanding of the biology, chemistry, and physics behind all of these tests. I didn't really start to figure out all the instrumentation until about age 23 and 2 years into grad school. But I didn't pay much attention to her company. Now that I'm going back and reading her statements on anything related to the science, any respectable chemist would have been able to spot the fraud if they payed enough attention.
