BART is a pathetic excuse for overreaching public union salaries and pensions, not a public utility.

BART has a purpose-it helps the commute. What purpose does high speed rail serve-if a return plane ticket from LA to SF is cheaper?? They should instead build some underground tunnel like the NY subway in LA to help ease congestion on the freeways.

This is just a vanity project-hey look at me-I am doing important work and am oh so cool.

Illegals can't fly even with their AB60 California DLs.

Here’s the difference.

A round trip flight from LAX to SFO or OAK is under $100 and takes an hour.

The train will cost more and take 3 hours.

The BART had no such alternative.

Once again I ask...and this far for two years on Pat.net not one person has answered...what exactly is the problem or situation that is being solved by having a “high speed” train from LA to SF?

Downtown to downtown transport.

Nobody gives a shit about downtown to downtown transport on the West coast. We have plenty of domestic airports which are much more convenient. Why would I want to drive 1.5 hours through hellish SFBA traffic to reach downtown SF for a train headed to LA when I can drive 15 min to OAK (or 30 min SJC) and fly from there? Same shit on the other side. Except LA has even more airports scattered around.

Flying from NYC to Baltimore is nuts.

Take the train and you can walk to Camden Yards when you get off the train in Baltimore

Yeah but there it may make sense. Los Angeles to San Francisco makes no sense. 100 bucks get you a round trip flight. The train takes far longer and is supposed to be more expensive.

It costs 100 billion plus-how many desalination plants can they build for that. Now spend 200-300 billion and build an under or overground commuter rail system that connects all of LA-that would help a ton of people stuck in their cars all day.

I traveled BART almost 10 years-it was godsend- 45 min to downtown SFO vs close to 2 hours, on traffic+ bridge tolls+ parking by car. Even with current high BART rate sit still makes sense.

I also did the LA to SF drive atleast a 100 times. I could get to LA city border in well under 6 hrs driving(I was a speed demon hitting 95mph past traffic areas -anything over 100 and in CA you could get arrested-I just rode 100mph in NV :) -) . if you have 2-3 people driving beats high speed train. Nobody uses that as a commute and flying is cheaper and much faster.

Why pay for high speed when you have to get a rental again?? Driving is better ,flying fastest and cheapest.

Less than 100,000 people live in downtown LA. Where the one train station is.

OTOH LA has airports all over with the same flights to Bay Area. Long Beach, Burbank, LAX, John Wayne, Ontario.

C’mon Dems explain the high speed rail line

And half of them are homeless.

Exactly instead if they build a system connecting the valley, ventura county, south los angeles, orange county to the major job centers and then feeder lines from there to the sub job centers-that would help the commute.

There’s already the outlying rail system. I have co workers that take those from Ventura, Lancaster, Irvine and ie. What would make sense is light rail running on the middle of the major freeways and streets in LA

Instead, gov brown advocates a ridiculous and unnecessary train. As I’ve said repeatedly, California voters are extremely stupid. Elsewhere, the voters would have already downloaded the Brown file.

Those “one hour” flights from Oakland almost never leave within two hours of the scheduled time, actually require you to check in two hours before leaving and pack people into seats like sardines in a can.

Yeah but not that friendly. When I lived there, car was better . if you take BART , you cna get anwhere to san fran froma BART station and pretty much most areas from a subarban BART station.
Not familiar with CALTRANS.

But if they want to do bold, saying build a very strong system under or overground that can carry millions and millions of people and make it faster and cheaper than a car and that gets them off the roads.

BART is not a boondoggle now? What do you call a parasitic public transport organization that unloads billions of dollars of pension obligations on taxpayers, has never been profitable, is extremely antiquated, has decades of deferred maintenance, and ask for hundreds of millions of dollars every few years in the form of new bonds that have terms in the 30-40 year range?

Boondoggle seems to fit quite nicely.

Sorry, but every part of the statement above is a lie.

Well, maybe except the "sardines" part, which is half-true for certain airlines and time of the day. But it hardly matters for a 50-minute flight.

Southwest is rarely late, and in no way shape or form requires a 2 hour early arrival.

Not sure if you are playing devils advocate, but grossly exaggerating things isn’t going to sway anyone except the dolt who liked you posting but is apparently incapable of articulating their position.

VIctor Davis Hansen has a video out, lost the link, that explains why certain Elite Enclaves closer to the Coast prefer Greenie Greenie Choo-Choos to Water Infrastructure.

It's something about county borders, price differences, their share of the water is still a surplus because they've strangled development, and of course, virtue signalling.
19   Ceffer   2018 Mar 23, 3:23pm

With the high speed train, if you have a press gang car devoted to homeless, you can empty SF of homeless one train car at a time.

If you are a regular passenger, you can get shit on by SF homeless when you embark, and get shit on by LA homeless when you disembark.
