It was in this hectic environment that Jones says it happened. While logged into an official Marriott Twitter account, he believes he probably — and accidentally — clicked “like” on a pro-Tibetan tweet thanking Marriott for listing Tibet as its own country, and not a part of China, on a survey. ...

Roy and no one else noticed that error that night. But a short 24 hours later, he and a lot of Marriott employees were most definitely aware.

Pro-Chinese forces were incensed that Tibet was listed as its own country on the Marriott survey. China has long made legal claim to the region and has controlled it since 1950.

Dozens of social media accounts were tweeting angry things, including many death threats, at both Roy and Marriott. This seems especially odd considering Twitter itself is officially banned in China, and thus can be accessed only by residents breaking the law or by bot accounts.

That same day, a top official in the hotel chain’s human resources department boarded a flight to Omaha, traveling here, Roy says, to fire him.

At this point, you might wonder: Why is this such a big deal?

Good question. Chinese anger is a huge deal to companies like Marriott because China is both a gigantic customer and a notoriously difficult business partner.

Great, now we have to worry what China thinks of our social media personas.

Better to just use anonymous sites like patrick.net!

Lors of things don't add up in this story. Like how a $14 an hour guy in omaha who clams to know nothing about china or tibet just happened to be reading the chinese daily to find the story on his firing for a start. Or why an executive would have to fly to Omaha to fire a low level employee. They don't have a manager at the call center? WTF? Sounds bogus to me.

The Omaha World Herald is common reading in the bay area? Learn something new every day.

It's about time Obama loving nincompoops get some the backlash of rotten policy from the Obama administration.

For a bunch of self progressive Commies, nobody said shit when Zuck's Honkey Grinder was killing careers of successful white middle age guys over their likes and Facebook posts.

Twitter, and FB has been dead to me since they came out. People are crazy for even being on it.

I said it before and I say it again: Twitter is idiotic.

Fired for essentially nothing. Possible when you’re not in a union! He’d also be making more money. Unionize for a better working life!

An errant "like" is better than opening your laptop to the previous evening's porn at a business meeting. Luckily for the embarrassed offender, his immediate shout of "Fucking Putin!" seemed to have provided some degree of cover.
