I'm curious if anyone has signed up at nextdoor? It's sort of like a mini-facebook for your local neighborhood. I'm sure you can sign up without an invite but I received one snail mail a few weeks ago and signed up for kicks.

Wow, what a leftie, boomer shit show! Topics include:

I'm not there but my wife has subscribed. According to her the most recent flame war is about dogs shitting on the lawns and how it's "illegal" even though the shit is picked up. Because the dog entering the front lawn is an "act of trespassing". People make up new laws on the fly and get all worked up about the violation of these imaginary laws. Hilarious.

I tried to check it out but the verification process seemed ridiculous to me.

Read some stuff about it, looks hilarious:

Works for where I live, but there’s important stuff too infrequently.

I've never used it but I have a (female) friend who is always mentioning it. The synopsis in OP is probably mostly correct. Some useful information comes through, but lots of annoying Soccer Mom with an "I'd like to speak to a manager" haircut type of chatter as well.

My wife loves it. I think it's mostly a way for the women of the neighborhood to keep in touch, which is quite useful at times. There is no other easy way to ask your whole neighborhood a question.

One downside is that they verify your address so you really give up a lot of privacy to use it. I suppose they need to do that, but it spooks me.

Got a nice set of couches from nextdoor - for free. And you know they are close by - so the pick up is not a hassle.

Didn't impress me, heard it's more of a place to go and fight with your neighbors, I don't want to meet crazy who knows where I live now. This country has serious mental issues, rampant. Cities breed weirdo's, kids who needed a good family, open spaces, diversity of whatever, and to learn how to play while they were young, they didn't. In my condo, I have neighbors I will talk too, look each other in the eye, and know we are looking into the eyes of sanity, the goofy ones we learn to ignore because they are not friendly anyway. I recently deleted most of my FB account, it's not quite their yet, but I'll have it locked and private soon. Being as the goofiest people I have ever met I find on social networks, no way will I join another ever again. Get out and talk to your neighbors in person.

You've got that right. I changed my address to my vacation rental in Maui and am now picking up all the neighborhood chatter. Finding alternative cleaning companies, recommended handy men etc. Quite useful!

Maybe one of the local woman there could find you handy.

This thread makes me lol

I find the nozimess creepy and the paranoia entertaining.

The site can be useful for some things like finding painters, contractors, house cleaners, gardeners, etc

But the amount of complaining is staggering. The Peninsula Nextdoors are also anti-Trump and anti-gun ball shining forums.

As Patrick pointed out, privacy is a major concern with that site.

Yes, maybe they need a handy member.

I see what you did there!

I belong in one spot and got chewed out by an IHL because I told somebody who couldn't afford the rent to go live somewhere where the job market was better and where he could afford to live instead of living where he thought he deserved. When he saved up enough money, maybe he could move back.

Really, a lot of people in California do think that they DESERVE to live on the peninsula or within a hundred yards of the ocean.

World go round in circles...dah dah...

This thread pretty much sums it up. I got flamed for pointing out that if you love your cat so much, why do you let it out in freezing weather. I would have been less hated for advocating euthanize pf kindergartners. Anyway before I resigned I explained I had found the lost cat and warmed it up in my oven in a pan with some of its favorite toys: chopped celery and carrots, potatoes, and a little salt and pepper.

Never heard of this site. Just tried to do a burner account to check out the registration process. Fuuuuuck that noise. Unless it's for a purchase of something, you're not getting my address. Address verification isn't even a requirement on Facebook (which I unfortunately have to use for business).

What was also creepy, was that on one of the screens it had a sample of some of what was going on in my neighborhood. I live in a tiny town. The entire length of my street is maybe 20-30 houses. I know everyone. I check the police blotter. One of those samples was regarding a car break in on my actual street even though I made up a BS address in town 8 blocks away. Hasn't been a car break in since I've lived here on this street, before this site was even created in 2011. So yeeaaahhh...

Hate using a VPN, but it's going on full time now. I knew privacy was bad, but making up things based off my location to try and get me signed up is beyond bullshit. I can live with slightly slower internet.

If you haven't put your VPN on your router I'd recommend that. I've been using a netgear Nighthawk router I flashed with tomato firmware last year. The VPN I've been using is ipvanish.

Seems to all work fairly well. I haven't noticed any speed issues at all.
