I think Trump or not, a confrontation with China was inevitable because their roadmap "Made in China 2025" means making China into a superpower competing with the US for high value added gear. They are no longer seen as cheap manufacturing and provider of cheap crap.
These are just the opening shots.
I expect Europe and the WTO to become involved.
Of course the establishment of people bent on making money short-term doesn't really understand the point.

I read a good book years ago about how China invited US manufacturing in primarily to steal US manufacturing intellectual property. Now it's a done deed.

And what does that equal? Mo money, mo money, mo money. But you have to be tough, the friendly occasional requests to lower barriers didn't work, so it's time to use punitive incentives. As was said earlier, with half a trillion dollar trade deficit, it's China, not US, who stands to lose big league.
