A couple of pertinent trends pointed out in this article for the American economy overall. Main reasons jobs are not being filled:

1. Dying population
2. Low income service jobs don't pay the rent

The Fed can stop a few pebbles from sliding downhill, but this is turning into an avalanche.

Ha! I forget I'm pre-banned by ABC news for pre-crimes. Can't use disqus on there.

"Rig the labor market for me! I demand it. But your health care premiums are going up 15% due to market demand for health care."

What could go wrong? A nanny state in Hawaii that wont let anyone go hungry or without a marginal income, weather that can't be beat, and a non arrest policy even if people live in abject squalor.

For those of you that don't know, there are small towns in Oahu that are literally overrun with people living in makeshifts and broken down cars. These places are beyond disgusting. Jobs available and the pay of those jobs is of no consequence...none of these individuals has any intent of working....even if the pay was $100K a year....

Contrast this with a place like the Big Island, where the rural nature allows poor people to fish, hunt pigs, grow food, etc, and the homeless population is near zero, despite the same climate but with far fewer social services(that are available to the poor, but not necessarily the very few homeless). .

Agree big island is best.

Lots of drugs 'n thugs on the islands, with a byzantine, corrupt and opaque bureaucracy based on traditional island politics. The yuppie enclaves are quite different from the island populations (where you can get the same stuff for a fraction of the price).

From the sounds of it, The islands have an even more dismal public education system than Cali, with the teachers being glorified welfare humps and the kids being functionally illiterate and unmotivated. Send kids there if you want them to be in a physical fight and get beaten on a weekly basis, certainly don't expect them to get an education. The handful of private schools are a necessity. Jobs in construction, health care, service industries and agriculture can be had with patience. There are many world wandering vagabonds and hand to mouth itinerants. It's clearly a place where it is preferable to bring your money rather than expect to earn it.

There can be a lot of good vibes and pono if you can swing with the culture. However, when I was in Maui, there is rampant property theft and I could see the knots and clusters of addicts hanging around the public parks and parking lots. Even so, I would rate it not as bad as Santa Cruz has gotten with the homeless and addicts.

Hawaii still has homesteading for natives, also on the big Island I believe. Find that 1/52nd Hawaiian ancestry from your dad's "military excursion" in the 40's and live like a king!

I heard Hawaii is more Good Ol' Boy than Alabama. If you're an Islander, I heard you can run over a tourist drunk and get a slap on the wrist

It appears to be so. I have a friend who was on vacation who was rear ended in a rental car by an island bro in a huge Dodge truck on Oahu, no insurance from the island bro. My friend had to leave the islands, of course, with the rental car totaled and neck injuries. After dickering at arm's length, he realized he was never going to get anything from the other guy who hit him, the bureaucrats just did the third world no spekee, no hearee thing with him until he got the message that nobody was going to do anything about the guy who was at fault. He had pictures of all the vehicles and the scene from his cell phone, it didn't matter. The fact that he was haole and a tourist just made it worse.

He wound up just settling for whatever insurance he could recover.

Hawaii has a lower labor force participation rate than the rest of the country. These people aren't counted in the unemployment rate, as they're not looking for work.

Just looking at the low unemployment rate doesn't tell the whole story.

From the article: "Many of Hawaii's available jobs are in the service sector and don't pay enough to cover the state's high housing costs."

This seems to be a commonly occurring theme. If your income is average or below average, shelter is a luxury you may not be able to afford.

I stayed at a nice condo right on the beach in Waikiki, near a Starbucks which opened at 5AM! I am an early riser, so I would head out at 6-6:30AM for a run, or to get a coffee and croissant. The sidewalk was lined with homeless people. The beach showers were being used. People stirring. Zombies biting head off struggling tourist. Just keep moving.

Venezuela. Post is more about US overall economic direction, though I doubt we'll reach Venezuela levels, even at our worst point.
