London stabbings: 300 extra police deployed on streets to tackle spike in knife crime.
Hundreds of additional police officers have been deployed on the streets of London this weekend in areas of the capital worst affected by the spike in violent crime.
It comes as Mayor of London Sadiq Khan promised more arrests and backed increasing the use of intelligence-led stop and search by police, insisting keeping Londoners safe is his “top priority”.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick has insisted the force has “not lost control” of the capital’s streets, but acknowledged the escalation of violence was “very worrying”.
An additional 300 Met Police officers deployed over the weekend will be working to reduce knife crime in the capital, Ms Dick has confirmed.
“From our part we need to up our efforts and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” she told LBC.
“Over this weekend we will have 300 more officers each day exclusively working against knife crime, exclusively in those parts of London that have been most affected recently.
“In what we call the hotspots.”

A flurry of attacks saw six more stabbings in London on Thursday, compounding a recent violent crime spike in the capital.
In the latest spate of knife attacks, six youths were assaulted within a 90-minute period.
A 13-year-old boy was seriously wounded after being stabbed in east London, with three youths arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, Newham Police said.
He was rushed to hospital at 6.57pm after being stabbed in broad daylight.
Two 15-year-old boys were also in a serious condition in hospital following a stabbing in Mile End around an hour earlier.
Hackney Liberal Democrat mayoral candidate Pauline Pearce, 52, who was among the attendees, said the recent string of stabbings and shootings were partly a result of young people feeling "disenfranchised" by their environments.
She said: "A lot of the children feel disenfranchised, they don't feel they belong, they haven't really got a meaning - they don't feel that they have that connection to society, so a lot of things go wrong for them and sadly this is the sort of retaliation that comes."
