Rents will surely be impacted, by a big employer like Amazon setting up shop. But I have a hard time believing they would go up $700. Other forces will help stabilize prices. Property values will go up as well. Local government tax revenue would go up too. However, singling out Amazon, who is a one of many employers is silly, though. If the city/locality gives up too much in tax incentives in order to get Amazon in, that's a somewhat legitimate complaint.

A single employer doesn't have this power over rents in a whole LA, even if it brings 100K jobs into an area. The population of LA metro area is a fucking 12 million or so.

Meaning these cities don't want jobs because that would mean more people to fill them?
Or they want only illegals workers, because you can put 4 of them in a garage and no one cares?

Maybe instead of focusing on whether this company creates jobs or that one, they should focus on building sufficient housing units for the population that exists.

Why do we allow city and county governments in the Bay Area to spend millions of dollars of tax money to attract even more industry and jobs here. Our unemployment rate is at a record low. There are Hiring Now signs everywhere. CA doesn’t have a shortage of jobs. We have a shortage of housing for people who have jobs here. This money be used to relieve the housing shortage instead of aggravating. More jobs, especially more good paying tech jobs, just cause higher rents and more traffic problems.

A Depression would be a boon to renters. Unless they needed a job to pay rent.
