How Moqtada al-Sadr went from anti-American outlaw to potential kingmaker in Iraq.

Now, Sadr is poised to assume a new sobriquet: kingmaker, after leading a political coalition to what appeared to be an early lead in national elections in Iraq. Sadr did not run in the election but may be able to choose Iraq’s next leader.

Moqtada al-Sadr began his quest for prominence after the toppling of Saddam Hussein. It rested on a sense of homegrown nationalism, a steely opposition to foreign domination and a willingness to fight.

He criticized political figures who were backed by Iran or promoted by Americans as unworthy of leadership.

“The people who deserve to rule are the ones who stayed here,” he said, sending his loyalists to battle American troops repeatedly in the early years of the U.S. occupation.

The labels he earned from U.S. officials reflected his growing notoriety: Over time, he went from “rabble-rouser” to “outlaw,” wanted by the U.S. government.

From the comments section in the article above:

Unfortunately many Americans (and almost ALL of Trump supporters) will fail to understand the significance of this turn of events. What is unfolding in Iraq will require the attention of a President who:

ONE - knows what he is doing, understands the competing interests in the Middle East, and can operate within the subtle nuances of Middle Eastern diplomacy and power politics.

TWO - is humble enough to avoid viewing the world through the ethnocentric world view of his mid-to-late twentieth century predecessors, as he calculates the US' next moves.

In Donald Trump we are woefully lacking in BOTH one and two.

The only hope we may have for avoiding sacrificing more American young men may be that Moqtada al-Sadr, like Kim Jong Un, has come to realize that Trump can be PLAYED. Moqtada al-Sadr may realize that all he has to do is publicly flatter Trump, offer him empty PR gestures that erode NONE of Sadr's real lethal power, and Trump will call him "excellent" and lick Sadr's boots in order to be photographed with him.

Either way, repression and sectarian conflict is about to return to Iraq, in spades!

If Iraqis actually want to vote him into office, who gives a shit?

Let the Iraqis live with the benefits or consequences of their choice.

Not great - but al-Sadr ran as the more moderate Shia coalition against Iranian influence compared to the more radical al-Amiri.
