Kiev (AFP) - Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko on Thursday defended faking his own murder with the cooperation of the Ukrainian security services, after the shock operation was criticised by fellow reporters.

Kiev has come under fire after it admitted staging the killing in a bid to foil what it said was a real assassination plot by Moscow against the anti-Kremlin journalist.

Babchenko made a scarcely credible reappearance at a press conference in Kiev on Wednesday, more than 12 hours after the Ukrainian authorities reported he had been shot dead at his home in a contract-style killing.

"My goal was to stay alive and ensure the safety of my family. That is the first thing I am thinking about. Journalist standards are the last thing I am thinking about now," the Russian said at a second press conference on Thursday.

After initial expressions of relief that Babchenko was alive, many fellow journalists have sharply criticised the staging of his death for undermining the credibility of the profession.

"Friends, I couldn't care less. I don't care whether you believe it next time... as when I'm dead it won't matter to me anymore," Babchenko replied.

The Kremlin earlier Thursday said the story was "at the very least bizarre" and dismissed accusations that it had attempted to assassinate Babchenko.

Babchenko's staged killing fooled the world's media and led to press freedom groups raising fears about the impact it could have on the work of journalists around the globe.

Some said the staged death could only lead to more accusations of "fake news", at a time when the distinction between credible and non-credible sources is becoming ever more crucial.

Can someone please explain why faking a death would somehow expose the identity of the purported contract killers? That was the narrative being floated in the news yesterday.

Not the identity of the killer - that guy is already cooperating with the authorities, but the identities and connections of the people who ordered the killing and acted as intermediaries. Fairly standard practice in cases like that. It goes like this: a wife hires a man to paint her husband's house, the killer gets cold feet and goes to the authorities. Then the death of the husband is staged, some kind of "proof" is manufactured (a picture, an article in a local paper, etc.) and the "killer" goes to meet the happy"widow" to pick up the rest of the payment (while wearing a wire). Gives the prosecution open and shut case on a silver platter.

And this is different from what Kremlin said about killings of other two dozens of journalists who were critical of Kremlin exactly how?

Should I re-type it more slowly? It's a fucking description of a fucking standard LE practice of staging a fucking murder in order to prosecute the fucking person who fucking ordered it. Makes the case in court so much stronger than a simple testimony of a contract killer who decided not to go through with the murder.

Here's a concrete example: http://www.fox5dc.com/news/man-fakes-his-death-to-help-police-catch-wife-in-murder-for-hire-plot

Makes no sense.

I doubt the Ukrainian Intel and this Journalist were that smart or have a grasp of what's happening, but Hassan Rouhani is right.

It's how they nabbed "Dread Pirate Roberts"

Which is also a tale of how quickly an ancap "zone" can become a criminal dictatorship.

Jeebus!

What exactly makes no sense to you? Person A goes to peson B and says "kill person C and I'll give you $X". Person B agrees but goes straight to police.
If police arrests A for attempted murder of C straight away the whole case hinges on B's word vs A's word. Which means A most likely walks if tried in front of a jury.
Now, if jury sees and hears the tape of A paying money to B in exchange of a picture of "dead" C, A gets the chair.

What's there to be "that smart" about? It's practically a cliche. This shit is probably in fucking junior year texbooks for half a century already. If not more.

Wouldn't be surprised if every other important Ukie Intel Guy was on the take from either the Oligarchs/Mafia, Russia or both.

Screw up may have been deliberate to discredit.

The Gabon of Europe doesn't pay well.

Before 2014? Sure. To the point of literally Russian citizens running intel agencies, (equivalent of) Secret Service and even fucking Ministry of Defense. But they kicked out thousands of Russian whores via lustration process since then.

The fact that whole scheme was even possible and was not leaked to FSB in two month it's been going on shows that this is not the case anymore. It's obvious that Russian fucks were caught by surprize when it turned out the guy is not dead and the whole plot is uncovered.

I mean now. Corruption is probably even worse today than it was. Nobody gives a fuck, nobody is going down with the ship.

I just read the other day about some US-funded NGO that is supposed to help control corruption in Ukraine, has a director who has brought more property than his entire salary several times over. Even the Atlantic Council can't put a lipstick on this Pig.

I mean you've got the governor of Odessa who is the former President of Georgia who is wanted by interpol for corruption charges, including sending to Hoboken for escorts ("Message Services") first class to Tblisi for 5 figures each time.

You are giving way to much credit to Ukrainians here.

Here is a short history of Ukraine in the last 15 years:
1. 2003 - credit bubble starts
2. 2007-2008- the top of credit bubble. Currency is at 4.5 to 1 dollar
3. 2010-2012 - Currency at about 8-10 to 1 dollar after credit bubble deflated. People were looking to Europe or Russia to save them. Of course both of those had their own issues.
4. 2014-2015 - Currency got to 40 to 1 dollar
5. Today - economy still sucks.

What Jeebus. I still don't get the "faking" part of it. Why fake it, and not just arrest the other guy in first place? What's the difference between before and after faking?
