USSR didn't recognize Western patents inside the country. Everything was available to everybody for free (as a shitty copy). Guess what: the standard of living was still far lower, than in the West. Therefore that guy is full of shit: eliminating patent and copyright protections won't lead to higher standard of living long-term. It will kill incentive to innovate and lead to stagnation.

I think the 20 year limit to patents is a good compromise between public interest and private interest.

We just need to make that apply to copyright as well. Currently, our copyright law is extended every time Micky Mouse comes close to becoming public domain:
